“I was a paid-up member of the Conservative Party and there’s no way I can vote for the Tories in the state they are in. They’ve lurched to the Right.”
Clearly from neither Tiverton nor Honiton but another fucking planet...
'You cannot be serious'! This Conservative Party is 'Right Wing'!!? It is in the most left wing condition it has ever been.
Exactly. Where do they find these people?
There are many reasons to criticise the party right now, but a 'lurch to the Right' isn't one of them.
I've long suspected that a lot of people who get interviewed by the media claiming to be lapsed Tories are anything but. Likewise the 'balanced' audiences on Question Time etc. Say they're Tory to get on in the interest of 'balance' but they're barely undercover lefties.

I cannot imagine that he will now last for very long in that position!

I cannot imagine that he will now last for very long in that position! Depends on the set up; Newcastle Conservative Club was by the mid-80’s completely independent of the Conservative Party, and indeed the Co-op Party used to retire there post meeting because the beer was about 5p cheaper, and it had an excellent quality snooker table.

So much so that a friend of mine, who is a Labour councillor in a neighbouring borough, had her 50th birthday bash in the local Conservative Club. Most of the council's ruling Labour Group seemed to be there.

It sounds like Cheadle Hulme Conservative Club. My father was a member for years in order to use the snooker table. He told me that one of the committee members was a Communist.

Polls have now closed. When can the result be expected? With only 8 candidates compared to Wakefield's 15, it should come earlier.

OTOH, its a more rural seat so could take longer to gather in all the ballot boxes, plus I would say the chance of a recount is probably greater than Wakefield. Also posting this here as well in case anyone missed it in the other thread. Live blog covering both seats here

I don't really get post-poll closing expectations management. The result will be known in a few hours, why not just give your honest assessment of what you think the results will be?

Apparently the declaration of the result may come as late as 4am....

If Newcastle Labour club are political they keep it very quiet. Battersea Labour Club too. I had a pint in there while pretending to campaign in 2018 (for appearances sake I was supposed to canvass once in the ward I stood in!)
