That is pretty bad, given that the people they spoke to are in her home patch! I remarked much earlier on in this thread that perhaps she might not go down as well/be as visible in Tiverton given it is a large, sprawling constituency, but to be that invisible/unpopular in one’s home patch takes some doing. Perhaps the ‘baggage’ of the status of being a former deputy mayor isn’t always positive - simply trading off the title may be a negative if people haven’t heard of you or your achievements for the area. I can imagine some thinking ‘she was our deputy mayor? What did she ever do for us then that would make her a good MP?’ Granted this is just a tiny selection of ‘vox pops’, but I’d never expect to see several negative comments in such a short article on a new candidate, not even an incumbent. I don’t seem to recall even as much around Neil thingy in North Shropshire, that was probably more people on this forum/Twitter making fun of the fact he didn’t know which village he was in. Surely being a Deputy Mayor is simply "available to do the functions the Mayor can't fit in or doesn't want to attend" ? As a distinction it ranks marginally below Chairman of the local Rotary and just above former Milk Monitor at school. But well below Blackboard Monitor (cf. Sam Vimes)

Who exactly thought that people will be put off voting Lib Dem in a by-election in the current political climate by a quote saying that the party's number one priority is to oust the current Conservative government?

good attempt at expectation management, but I don't think such a prediction is that far out TBH. I don't expect it to be all that close. Either by-election.

Well to be fair it's a heavily Conservative area, and the most likely outcome is the seat will return to the norm at the next General Election however the by-election goes. A potential protest vote doesn't mean the majority of people in the seat don't want a Conservative government when all is said and done

I was under the impression that putting out a leaflet designed to look like another party's leaflet was one of those things that was only ever done by - well, those wicked Liberal Democrats

They want a Conservative government, just a better/ more Conservative one.

Indeed and the Tories will be trying to discourage the idea that the Lib Dems are a safe protest vote. I don't expect it to work but that's the idea

In their haste to find a local candidate the Tories have ended up with one who just isn't very good and needs to be shielded from the media

I was under the impression that putting out a leaflet designed to look like another party's leaflet was one of those things that was only ever done by - well, those wicked Liberal Democrats The Tories did this in North Tyneside earlier this year with a ‘Labour are too moderate, voting Green is a good protest vote/not a wasted vote’. The only thing that showed it wasn’t a Green leaflet was a small imprint that had the initials of a Conservative organisation (not that a normal voter would recognise it). Labour ended up gaining the ward.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The next Tory leaflet will surely have a bar chart! In my ward in May the last Tory leaflet had a very passable bar chart, complete with "Can't win here" for the Lib Dems. I did wonder if we could sue for copyright...

The times has done its ‘ find some voters’ bit here in todays edition,
Those they found.
Jane Barnes, 90, always voting Conservative, but will be voting Lib Dem , doesn’t like Boris, would like Jeremy Hunt to be leader Diana Norris, 82, usually votes Conservative, but will be voting Lib Dem. Boris is so scruffy, Theresa May and John Major were beautifully dressed’ Nick Reed 64, Conservative voter, will be voting Conservative, believes the media are deceiving the public on party gate. Elizabeth Grise, 72, Used to vote Conservative but has stopped voting. Johnson epitomises one rule for me, one rule for everyone else. Debbie Light 59, Debbie Lloyd 60. Conservative voters Bored of partygate, will probably not vote this time. Dont like the behaviour of politicians.
I reckon the Conservatives will go from getting 5 votes to 1 out of those 6 people. I imagine they’d get 5 again with a different leader at the next election.
