I agree about middyman and thus venture my own small entry in his place.

I lived for some time at Woolpit not far from Thurston which is a good sized village on the railway line from Ipswich-Stowmarket-(Haughley Junction)-Bury St Edmunds-Cambridge (or Ely-Peterborough).  But 40-years ago!

Two pubs, one the Fox and Hounds very near the quite elevated railway station with line running on an embankment.  Commuting to various places for work makes it popular and expanding.  Was a large rural college there?  My second wife took up with a man there so I have mixed feelings about the place!

Was decades ago fairly Conservative and must have expanded and gone considerably up-market since then?  Younger off-comer commuters will probably be the driving force in the Greens.

and getting near misses in apparently very hostile territory.

Do you consider that the Conservative wins at Scunthorpe, Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Don Valley and Rother valley were in '... very hostile territory ...', and if not, why not?

I’ve been to the Fox & Hounds, but it was after a long pub crawl of Bury St Edmunds, so I don’t remember much about it.

Scunthorpe, no, it's been a marginal for a while. Bassetlaw has always had a solid Conservative minority presence.
The others, by history and tradition, yes, but all have been shifting to the Conservatives. Brexit pushed them all over the line, and Bassetlaw was presented to the Conservatives by the antics of the Labour party. But they have all been regarded as essentially safeLabour seats

The Devon council seats are all in areas where Labour have traditionally been third at parliamentary level and have been regarded as pretty much no go,not worth bothering with. A mistake.

Collingham is of particular interest this week as my mum lives there and has been complaining about the volume of literature from Debbie Darby in particular. As I think I noted on another thread, DD seems to be linked to the Ashfield Independents and her campaign has gone through the whole range of Lib Dem by-election templates - Mail merge letters, a3 risograph leaflets, fake local newspaper and even a “lifestyle magazine”.
