Ashley Bertie has also been shortlisted for Labour: Is he related to Burlington?

Is that her home constituency? Her ward is split between Perry Barr and Ladywood. No, the ward she represents is at the far end of the neighbouring constituency. Not that it's a problem. Jess Phillips represented the far edge of the city when she won Yardley. Is Robert Alden the type who will go searching for a safe Parliamentary seat at some point, or is he only interested in standing for his own area? 5 times in a seat that is only winnable if everything goes absolutely right, is a lot. As has been discussed before, I would have thought he was ‘senior’ to Gary Sambrook in Birmingham circles but Sambrook got the more winnable seat in 2019. Or is he waiting for Sutton Coldfield ( probably like every other Conservative for miles around!) Bobbie is the leader of the Tory group on Birmingham City Council. He represents Erdington ward. Maybe his eye is on the safe seat next door. Northfield was long thought of as a long shot and may well be a 1 time, Brexit fuelled Conservative win. Maybe waiting it out is the wiser choice.

Northfield had previous Conservative tendencies. Roger King was MP for quite a long time.

Northfield had previous Conservative tendencies. Roger King was MP for quite a long time. This is true, but for several elections the Tories prioritised Edgbaston, believing Northfield to be less winnable.

Andrew asked if her ward crossed the constituency boundary. I gave a very straight answer.

Labour shortlist of 2 apparently Interesting that *both* are Black in a seat that is one of the whiter parts of Birmingham.

How many people put themselves forward if only two are shortlisted?

Labour shortlist of 2 apparently Interesting that *both* are Black in a seat that is one of the whiter parts of Birmingham. 10% black and 6% mixed at the last census. Not exactly one of the whitest seats, even by Birmingham standards.

Labour seem to not have many ‘BAME’ male MPs other than those of Pakistani origin so I suspect they’ll try to rectify that here.

Does anyone know if Mike O’Brien (former MP for North Warwickshire) was one of them?
He seems to be sniffing around and trying to get back in the game somehow, and was very quick with a profound tribute to Jack Dromey even though they never actually sat in Parliament at the same time. (He did most likely know him through the Labour Party outside of party, obviously).
He also has an intriguing habit of regularly updating his Twitter bio to highlight parts of his CV that are particularly relevant at specific moments in time. When he was running for West Mids PCC it was all about his time as Solicitor General, but more recently he’s very keen to talk about his time as the “last Labour Minister of State for Health”.

How many people put themselves forward if only two are shortlisted? I know of at least three others. Without knowing anything about it, I would have thought that others who would have been interested might include Bridget Jones, Majid Mahmood, Sharon Thompson, John Cotton and Ansar Ali Khan. Whether all or any of them did not put their names forward to support someone else I have no idea. Given the new seat if the boundary changes go through loses Kingstanding and gains Aston with an implied 2019 majority of 11,000 (even on a very low turnout), it is an attractive proposition.
