Yes, I agree. License was transferred in 2019 and has been transferred again since. Of course, he may not be the license holder but that article is quite old.

It will be interesting to see how much support Michael Lutwyche does get (with his campaign connected to the Birmingham pub bombings) as those happened in Edgbaston constituency, not Erdington.

He has picked a constituency with a significant Irish population - 6% identified as Irish at the last census, not counting second and third generation. I well remember the feelings of discomfort and fear in the Irish community following the pub bombings when I first started staying in Erdington in the late 70s. Of course, the anti-Irish feelings are long gone and Paddy Hill supports the "Justice 4 the 21" campaign MrLutwyche lives in the constituency and insists he is not a single-issue candidate. Nonetheless, I suspect it is a way to keep the campaign in the headlines

No, they happened in Ladywood constituency apart from the one subject to a controlled explosion. Those killed and injured came from across the city and beyond it.

Good Knight = Goodnight = Nos da in Welsh. That candidate has also previously stood under his real name, Mark Beech.

I think that at one point he was involved with one of those organisations that promote becoming a landlord using 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' as a base text. I might be wrong but there can't be many people called Clifton occupying that sort of space.

There is a book called 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' by a man called Robert Kiyosaki. In it he talks about why his dad was poor despite working hard all his life and why his friend's dad was wealthy. It's full of the usual self help stuff and it's a bit fable-ish/full of stories with a moral in them. I was leant a copy but didn't read it properly. It's very American. It might prompt you to think a bit, but so does 'How To Solve It' and I'd not use that as a life manual (useful though it is). There are companies that claim to teach you how to invest in property and offer various 'advanced' courses for thousands of pounds, promoting the concept of reaching your 'financial freedom figure' using their methods: which also seem to be a bit boilerplate-y, like RDPD. I can't say if they're a scam or waste of time, but... These companies often cite, use, quote from or encourage their 'students' to read RDPD, but in reality it doesn't contain any lessons that a reasonable intelligent person doesn't already know even if they don't act on that knowledge.

It is a truism that it is possible for all poor people to exit poverty in Britain by addressing inner problems and thinking harder and changing life-styles and attitudes. But it is not possible for all people to become rich, nor anywhere near it.

I think I noted somewhere near the beginning of this thread that this constituency had the same Conservative (Alden), Labour (Dromey) and Lib Dem (Ann Holtom) candidates in each of the last four elections. I am guessing this is unique amongst all constituencies but don't know for sure. There was also a John Alden who stood for the Conservatives in October 1974 and 1979 (coming within 680 votes of defeating Robin Corbett) - father and son? Robin Corbett did not become the MP here until 1983 - having previously represented Hemel Hempstead until defeated in 1979.

Sorry, I started to say the smallest majority except Robin Corbett’s 231 in 1983, but decided against it, and then made a complete hash of editing what I posted. The 680 majority should of course be against (right word?) Julius Silverman.

I have posted my ward profiles for Erdington constituency on the metropolitan boroughs thread, which may interest those concerned with this by-election.

I suspect that there has not been another by-election where the constituency is already ‘represented’ by two MPs albeit in their roles as City Councillors. Possibly even one MP holding a role as local councillor in the constituency would be unique (as far as by-elections go).

If I recall correctly, the Conservative candidate who just lost out in 1983 was (now Lord) Daniel Moylan who has been rather high profile in the media defending the Prime Minister recently.
