The Parliamentary and the first round of the Presidential elections are happening today. This is a decent start to the main candidates: americasquarterly.org/article/meet-the-candidates-chile/Though Franco Parisi (broadly centre right and socially liberal) could make the top 5 too. The runoff is likely to be between Boric (left) and Kast (right).

And it will indeed be Kast v Boric. From what I can see, the results look pretty good for Kast’s chances in the runoff, and thus I guess the parliamentary results are going to be decent for the right.
That’s a pretty big comedown for the left after their landslide victory in the constituent assembly elections a few months back.

Dictatorship apologist (incl. torture and disappearances) and son of an actual Nazi, whose views he never distanced himself from. It's quite common to call Kast far right (has been done by plenty of serious media and researchers) and not without reason, he's not your run-of-the-mill right wing populist. If elected he'd likely be a more competent and ruthless version of Bolsonaro.

Fair enough, I don’t claim to be any kind of expert, but I’ve always seen him reported more like a Nigel Farage (to use a British parallel). ‘Dictatorship apologist’ is also a bit of a weird one in Chile, where anyone who is a member of a right wing party, even if they are the most moderate of moderates, tends to have some pretty nice words to say about Pinochet, whereas the functionally identical ‘left’ winger would portray him as some caricature of Hitler.

In fact, the left has won a narrow majority in Chamber, while the Senate is tied between left and right.

Those surnames are an interesting representation of immigration to Chile. Croats, Germans....

Those surnames are an interesting representation of immigration to Chile. Croats, Germans.... On my last visit to Chile the guide was a German Chilean, and spoke in German to some of the locals in the Lake District. German immigration to southern Chile was strongly encouraged for fear of the Argentinians annexing northern Patagonia. There are many Slavs in southern Patagonia for similar reasons. And as usual later generations have abandonned the hard pioneer life for the cities.

I saw an article years ago about certain places loom large in the psyche of European countries as New World utopias for which generations past had left. Slightly mythical, and often with a bittersweet sense of people failing or succeeding, staying or returning, and various permutations of those. For Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany, America normally filled this role. For Ukrainians, Canada (as a positive) and Brazil (as a negative). For Germans from the Hunsrück, Brazil again. Italy, a mix of America and Argentina. And for Croatia, Chile very much takes that role, apparently. Really fascinating. (That reminds me that there is a town in Brazil that is essentially run as a Ukrainian Greek Catholic theocracy)

Kast ends up barely 2% ahead of Boric with all votes counted, that must mean the latter has a decent chance in the second round.
(and interestingly, the often unreliable polling was pretty accurate - as it had been in Peru)

It will all come down to how Parisi's voters split - he is generally described as a liberal, but also as a populist. He is a notionally a part of the right, but not really 'of' the right, and his strongest areas are traditionally leftist. So who knows.

I guess, it will be - if no major changes will happen - ~52% for Boric.
Kast presiding over a left Congress and leftextreme Constitutional Assembly would be exciting...

Despite all outSiderdom and additions of Trump&Bolsonaro-elements he is a typical representative of the elite, so a conservative Liberal ("Libertarian"). But nowadays there exist more than enough fraudly "Liberals", who would - if they knew Them - be shocked of (mostly proSlavery and antiDemoctratic!) real Liberals like LOCKE, SHAFTESBURY, MILL, A.SMITH, CONSTANT, TOQUEVILLE, BENTHAM and condemn Them (and topple Their statues) as "right-exteme" "racists", "sexists", "homophobs" aso.

With the OpinionPolls for the RunOff all over the place, a look at those of the first round is not without use. Contrary to the pollsters' bad reputation the last ones were quite good, with deViations of only ~1% per candidate:

Final round of the Chilean presidential election today between a far-right populist and a left-winger supported by the Communist Party. What could possibly go wrong.
As we've got Boris, I don't feel that I'm in any position to comment.

Final round of the Chilean presidential election today between a far-right populist and a left-winger supported by the Communist Party. What could possibly go wrong. Though that is a little misleading - the Chilean Communists are fairly mainstream, and, since the return of democracy, have more than once backed the ‘mainstream’ left wing candidate. Boric is definitely towards the left of the left, but we’re talking Jeremy Corbyn here, not Nicolas Maduro.
