Yes, the genuine extremist here is Kast.

Ugh. They're both terrible, but I'd vote for Kast.

Final round of the Chilean presidential election today between a far-right populist and a left-winger supported by the Communist Party. What could possibly go wrong. might the Lib Dems win it from third place? a bar chat somewhere suggest they might!

Victory for Boric, Kast has conceded.

Kast has conceded in what looks like a fairly comfortable Boric win. That’s a relief.

Not sure I'd describe an antisemitic crypto communist winning "a relief", but you do you.

I think what's meant by that is it is a relief that Kast isn't contesting the result and accepts it rather than the result itself is relief. That's my reading of the post. Given that Chile has only had democratic elections in the last 30 years, there's previously been a coupe in Chile, we're living in times where democracy is being challenged and there has been insurrection, this statement is fair imo. ofc some people might be all for Kast challenging the vote and therefore this isn't a relief for them

Asking Jewish people to condemn the settlements is antisemitic, especially given the context of their gift on a completely unrelated topic. If Kast had said, "I'm grateful for the Muslim community's gift, but they should condemn ISIS and Al Qaeda instead", you'd be fucking howling.

My point was along the lines of what mattbewilson said, though yes, I do also think it is a relief that Boric was elected over a Pinochetista. As I said earlier, Boric is in the left of the left, but is still well within the mainstream. The same cannot be said of Kast unfortunately. That tweet is also not anywhere near as bad as made out by the translation. Partir can mean ‘to leave’ in some contexts, but here it clearly means ‘begin by’.

I don't think the "Jewish Community" in this tweet is equal to "every jew in Chile" because I don't think the chilean jews decided collectively to send honey to a candidate. It is obviously the name of an organization, which politics I have no idea of. That a candidate criticize the politics of an organization I don't think could be considered as antisemitic, even when the organization is trying to say they should be protected from criticism by appropriating an entire religion/color of skin/sex/whatever.
The question is: does this organization currently supports the Isreaeli government policies of appropriating territories which international negociations have deemed palestinians ?
If it does, I don't think it should be protected from criticism on the basis that it would be racist to disagree with them.
If it does not, then this candidate's tweet is lunatic.

You cannot expect Jewish people to go around flagelating themselves due to the excesses of Israel. People would rightly never accept that for Muslims, the Chinese or anyone else.

I have no idea if there’s any sort of history there (and neither do you). As it happens I agree with you that this is *probably* anti-Semitic, but one questionable, puerile tweet is really not on the same level as Kast. But whatever. It’s interesting that the genepool left wing areas who went for Parisi in the first round have reverted back to Boric. They have trended hard to the right in recent elections (miners in Chile are now objectively quite rich), but have played a big part in Boric’s win, along with his historically good performance in Santiago.

And baby, I'm gonna shake, shake, shake, shake it off.😘💅 I think that reply is worth just as much as your second sentence.

Indeed, I have seen the map. I had wrote a longer reply, but it's late so I'll just say this. Frankly, neither of us have much skin in this game. The Chilenos, good people they are, wanted to elect this man, I say good luck to them. With the past experiences of Latin American nations who elected men like Boric, they'll need it. However, I will however call him out when it's required.

He is not even that, David. In 2017, for example, he celebrated this tasteful shirt with the face of the murdered LawProfessor & UDI-senator Guzman: ...and after seeing his pettybourgeois career dwindling due to the public outRage "apologized". And visited 2018 the murderer of Guzman in his exile... Even for real, though-thinking Marxists - if they were alive these days - not more than a hold&form&character-less piece of sh!t.

On my last visit to Chile the guide was a German Chilean, and spoke in German to some of the locals in the Lake District. German immigration to southern Chile was strongly encouraged for fear of the Argentinians annexing northern Patagonia. There are many Slavs in southern Patagonia for similar reasons. And as usual later generations have abandonned the hard pioneer life for the cities. I saw an article years ago about certain places loom large in the psyche of European countries as New World utopias for which generations past had left. Slightly mythical, and often with a bittersweet sense of people failing or succeeding, staying or returning, and various permutations of those. For Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany, America normally filled this role. For Ukrainians, Canada (as a positive) and Brazil (as a negative). For Germans from the Hunsrück, Brazil again. Italy, a mix of America and Argentina. And for Croatia, Chile very much takes that role, apparently. Really fascinating. (That reminds me that there is a town in Brazil that is essentially run as a Ukrainian Greek Catholic theocracy) Something like 25% of Chileans are of Basque extraction. There are even Chilean wines playing on that with names like 'Vascos.'
