Obviously wont lead to a recall but - and I know this is thinking a long way ahead- is it likely, do we think, that it will result in deselection for 2029? I'd imagine he will retire. He will be 60. I'm not sure what happens.

should they treat a M.P any different to anybody else Yes actually. There are many cases where it might be fine to investigate then press no charges because frankly its not worth the bother and the shot across the bows has already been achieved by a couple of interviews under caution. The process was the punishment and lets not overdo it. Or you just steamroller ahead with charges because its an obvious wrong un and even if you lose the case its all good But with an MP you dont want to bring a case unless its watertight

60 is actually a point where it's too late to explore other options and the only rational career path is to milk it for all its worth
Ask any GP, teacher, civil servant, college lecturer, social worker, etc.
Go part-time, milk the sick policy, "work" from home, enquire about wind-down, go on courses, get onto panels, explore coming back as a consultant,

Everybody is catching up - if they overtake, I will be considered a slacker).

It seems to be the triumph of the over sixties everywhere at the moment after a brief burst of youth. Trump/Biden, Starmer, Scholz, Barnier, Albanese... Maybe Italy will finally buck the trend and elect a president who wasn't born before Garibaldi.

Fair enough. No arguement with that. How much value did you offer when you were first ordained?

If you look at business, or entertainment, or art, or the public sector, or academia, the peak years ought to be 20-30 for being innovative and 30-60 for being productive.
Why would politics be any different?
My best years are behind me. My best years were not all that great

The Sacraments are hugely underrated. In marked contrast to the public sector. You and I probably average out. Well you, anyway.

To counter that a little, on an issue where we closely align, I became a Chaplain for the Travelling Community 3 years after I was Ordained, and the last 30 years have been a true blessing. When I was a Prison Chaplain, along with the remarkable Yvonne McNamara of the Irish Travellers Movement in London, we had Travellers of all kinds recognised as an ethnic community worthy of recognition and support within the Prison and Probation Service, where they had faced appalling prejudice. I have fought vile prejudice from councillors of all parties when it comes to responding to the needs of Travellers, and am truly sad that I have not been able to do more. Being older might give me more wisdom.

You are the only Forum member of whom I would say this.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to buy you a drink one day

I would be grateful for the opportunity to buy you a drink one day When my Prison Service pension comes through (should have happened on July 17th - long and depressing story), I am buying a motorhome/campervan and will be heading up to Scotland when I get a break. I will look, at some point soon, to take you up on that offer.

Edinburgh, St Andrews, Dundee or Aberdeen (not Dunkeld - in-joke)
I will open by apologising for being such a serial dick

Funnily enough - no one in my family has still worked at 60. My dad took seven years off work after he hit 45. My mother hasn't really worked for about 10 years. Both sets of grandparents retired at 57. I've never had a full-time job either. And CatholicLeft, when you get that motor home, do visit London at some point.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2mx8dej84oAs noted in the piece, what is being investigated is exactly what Ian Paisley junior got in trouble for, which led to a lengthy suspension and a recall petition. Sammy Wilson was re-elected with only 28.9% of the vote in July so it's not the safe seat it once was.

I don’t want to see his holiday snaps from that trip. Or any trip.
