Following the formal adoption of Eluned Morgan in the Welsh Senedd today we now have two former First Ministers who are now backbenchers in the respective Parliaments. Humza Yousaf MSP (SNP, Glasgow Pollok) and Vaughan Gething MS (Lab, Cardiff South and Penarth), therefore the question is "Do they resign their seats before the next election or stand down at that election?" We have three unless Nicola Sturgeon resigned as MSP for Southside and everyone here and the media somehow missed it. The answer to your question in No, by the way.

Can’t see any of them going pre 2026.

Your typically silly question ignores the very chance of them standing for re-election.

Lauren Edwards, Rochester & Stroud? For at least three pretty nasty and childish tweets in the past, where she has seemingly decided that Estonians, the homeless and Indian and Chinese restaurants are subjects of tweets that would shame a very childish teenager?

Lauren Edwards, Rochester & Stroud? One of the more unpopular Boundary Commission proposals!

Colour me sceptical since she hasn't had the whip removed just yet. If (a colossal "if") there's a by-election, I think Reform would throw the kitchen sink at it because Mark Reckless won Rochester for UKIP 10 years ago and Kent's decent for them, and the Tories lack a permanent leader. Would Emily Thornberry campaign here?

I think it's highly unlikely. If this had been say 2-3 years ago it would be one thing, but this is 15 years ago. People do change over time. I myself got a friend off her suspension from the Labour Party because her offending content had been quite a long time previously, and it was demonstrable that she had (still has) changed her views completely. And that was more recent than any of these tweets, dreadful though they undoubtedly are.

This point will have been made several times but we’re entering into a period where a generation of politicians (and indeed you can even apply this to other roles in the public eye) will have grown up with social media and there will be past output from when they were young adults or even teenagers. Some of that will be pretty stupid and unpleasant, people mature and learn about the world
There will need to be some general tolerance of those type of scenarios otherwise a lot of people will likely be driven out of public life in future due to historical social media

Is it possible to go back 10 years on X and delete one’s tweets? If so, I don’t understand why anyone thinking of running for Parliament wouldn’t go back and review their tweets and delete as required.

Shouldn't damn any of us forever. But Labour were pretty unforgiving of any past indiscretion on the part of Conservatives, so level playing field & all that

I have tweeted about 93,000 tweets since 2011, so if I tweeted something years ago which I might now consider foolish, then it doesn’t mean I’m going to remember doing so, or be able to find it.

Do we know how old she was in 2009? People will have different interpretations of a young person in this context I suppose, certainly I think someone early to mid 20s can very much have a propensity to be daft albeit some people mature quicker than others of course

There are tools available that will delete tweets en masse. So you could, for example, delete every tweet more than a year old.

It is possible to mass ‘nuke’ tweets, *however* and this is quite important there are external (non twitter) sites that can and do capture old tweets (way back when machine being a simple example).
Once someone knows your username/old username your tweets are potentially findable. That even happens if you change your username from @johndavies to @johndavies1 and ‘Nuke’ them.

When I left Twitter in December 2022 following Elon Musk's decision to allow vaccine deniers onto the platform, I closed my account and was told that all my tweets could be downloaded, and saved to my computer, but that once my account was closed all tweets would be wiped from the system.

Have you also cut off your telephone due to vaccine deniers having telephones? Have you also cut off any interaction with the Royal Mail due to vaccine deniers being able to post letters?
