Has anyone got the Basildon: Lee Chapel North voting figures. The Council has Labour being electerd no contest although 1,134 valid votes were cast. Furthermore the Council election office failed to answer the phone after almost 10 minutes ringing!! Labour “no contest” according to the council: www.basildonmeetings.info/mgElectionAreaResults.aspx?ID=271&RPID=16950188Looks like that's the default output from software used when vote numbers haven't been inputted.

Lancaster City Council Carnforth & Millhead Ward Bateson, Stuart James Alexander (Conservative) 315 McMurray, Patrick (Green) 54 Saville, Tony (Lib Dem) 25Taylor, Luke Kenneth (Labour) 538 elected Source: Haven't heard turnout % yet. J Presumably the same bloke who I played chess with back in the 1980s (he has stood for election in Lancaster BC a few times before) though he must be getting on a bit now.

I think you're thinking of Ashfield? The LDs under Alan Williams came very close to winning the by-election following John Golding’s resignation, but after that, whilst being a force on the Borough Council, from memory at least (and my carer’s here so I can’t check) have never threatened at Parliamentary level. Alan Thomas was the LD who came within 800 of taking the seat. And under old boundaries the LDs had 21 Cllrs at one point.

Knowing the area very well, I never thought I’d read the words ‘ Conservatives gain Knutton from Labour’ . Knutton is about as far from ‘typically Conservative’ as you could imagine. I think I’d be more tempted to write “Huckfield gains Knutton”; the guy’s represented the Ward for 25 years at least, as Caring Party (which ran to the left of Blairite Labour), Independent and UKIP, before finally pitching his tent in the Conservatives. It’ll be an interesting six months as he’s already been critical of the Conservative administration in ‘Castle for their sloth like response to Walley’s Quarry and was apparently opposing the reforms to the care sector on the doorstep. I’m not at all persuaded that anybody else could win Knutton for the Conservatives, and the narrowness of his win was a surprise. You missed out that Derrick Huckfield (the Conservative victor here) was also a Labour Cllr for this very ward for many years too (as well as a Caring Party/Old Labour/UKIP/Newcastle Independent Cllr)

Sorry, I knew he was Alan, he stood at the next General but got soundly beaten, and, IIRC, passed away not too long after. The by-election was shortly before I got actively involved in politics, but I did manage to get caught up in civil disobedience - we were doing a street collection in the Town centre for the Brittle Bone Society when Edwina Currie rocked up and tried to deliver a speech from the back of a flat bed truck, only to be “attacked” by a group of what I presume were Keele Uni students chucking eggs. The lone policewoman, to her eternal credit, abandoned Ms Currie, and shepherded the seven disabled kids and their parents to the safety of the Guildhall (now a Wetherspoons, so I’d probably take my chances with the egg throwers).

Horringer (West Suffolk) by-election result: CON: 47.7% (-21.2) LAB: 37.8% (+6.7) LDEM: 14.5% (+14.5) Conservative HOLD. Chgs. w/ 2019 On a decent night for the Tories that looks even worse. Any idea what's going on in West Suffolk? Is this Hancock's constituency?

Exactly, the Britain Elects way of presenting results does not help here.
(and its not actually the case for three anyway even going on the most recent result - Halton, Hambleton, West Suffolk)

I’m not sure that statement is factually correct, I see lots of falling Tory vote shares from yesterday’s results.

OK, so this is Bury St Edmunds constituency rather than West Suffolk and looking at the map of the ward it is a load of villages on the outskirts of the city - the map looks to me like an identikit map: www.andrewteale.me.uk/misc/w-suffolk-horringer.webpWhat's almost odder about the Tory collapse here is that it was Labour and not the Lib Dems that hoovered up the votes here.

You missed out that Derrick Huckfield (the Conservative victor here) was also a Labour Cllr for this very ward for many years too (as well as a Caring Party/Old Labour/UKIP/Newcastle Independent Cllr) I was sure he was, he quit the Party over Kinnock’s refusal to back Scargill, but as nobody, including Andrew in his Previews, had mentioned it, I didn’t trust my memory. I think he was a dual Borough/County councillor for Labour. A journey from supporting Scargill to supporting Johnson is an . . . interesting . . . direction of travel.
