Now the Conservatives have a candidate there’s no further need to delay the by-election, given that the other (main) parties have said they won’t stand.

She looks younger than 55. Probably the only thing she has in common with Claudia Webbe.

Anna Firth selected as Conservative candidate. Barrister, stood in Canterbury in 2019. Tried to get selected in Sevenoaks. Former leading light in "Women Against For Brexit".

Former leading light in "Women Against Brexit". Ah, that's mildly interesting.

She shouted at a friend of mine across Sevenoaks High Street, when they were distributing leaflets for the opposing camps.

Would that be "Men Against Brexit"?

Would that be "Men Against Brexit"? I see what you did there.

If the man parties had decided to contest this I wonder if it would have been interesting? Considering recent events and the fact that another safe seat in North Shropshire looks like being competitive at the very least

Well Lab got a 10.2% swing in Old Bexley and would have needed 15.6% in Southend West. So the odds would probably be Con hold if held at the same time as Old Bexley, which it probably would have been.

the LDs would surely have worked it too. They were fairly close here in 1997

If the man parties contested I would expect strong representation from the Women's. Equality Party (where are they now . . . ).

Naturally the LibDems will be encouraging all "progressives" here to support UKIP as the party best-placed to beat the Tories

I eagerly await a photocall by Neil Hamilton (or whoever's become Ukip leader by then) on Southend Pier.

Southend is not a liberal (or Liberal) place. The success of the Liberal Democrats locally in the 1990s was due to a complacent and moribund Conservative Council, and the usual "anyone but Conservative vote". When UKIP arose in the 2010s it had much more genuine support in Southend. At national level Labour was and is a more natural vote than Liberal Democrat. However there is no chance of Labour ever winning the west seat in Southend, although in present circumstances they would have a chance in the east seat.

Labour has some good support in Westborough but the rest of the constituency, though not posh, is basically too full of the sort of voters who don't vote Labour - even in 1997.
