There appears to be 27 by-elections for 28 seats during September.
- 3 by-elections on 2 September
- 6 on 9 September
- 4 on 16 September
- 6 on 23 September
- 2 including a “double” by-election on 28 September (note: this is a Tuesday)
- 6 on 30 September
16 by-elections, including the “double” by-election are for District Councils last contested in 2019, although two wards had a by-election in May
7 are for a Metropolitan Council previously contested in May
5 are for District Councils last contested in 2019
2 are for Unitary Authorities last contested in 2019
2 are in a London Borough last contested in 2018
1 is in a District Council where the ward was last contested in 2018
Conservatives defend 12 of the by-election seats including both seats in the “double” election, 11 following a resignation, one of which was sitting as an Independent, and 1 a disqualification where the previous councillor was sitting as an Independent Conservative
Labour defend 7 seats, 5 following the death of the previous councillor, one of which was sitting in the Middlesbrough Independent Group and 2 a resignation
Liberal Democrats defend 5 seats, 1 following the death of the previous councillor and 4 a resignation, one of which was sitting as an Independent
Independents defend 2 seats, one following the death of the previous councillor and one a resignation
Residents Groups defend 2 seats, one in Epsom and Ewell following the death of the previous councillor and one in the Residents for Wilmslow Group a resignation
With all SOPNs having been published, there is a full slate of 28 Conservative candidates, 26 Labour, 24 Liberal Democrats, 21 Greens, 1 North East Party, 1 Residents for Wilmslow Group, 1 Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, 1 Residents Association of Cuddington and 1 Putting Cumbria First along with 13 Independents and 1 No Description contesting 8 seats
- a total of 127 candidates for 28 seats.
Again, note that the 28th contests take place on a Tuesday. Top vote is used for the “double” election and as always, predictions on this thread at 9.00am on the day of the election.
