After all these jokes, it'll probably turn out that Tower Hamlets is the first result we have this week. I find all these jokes as amusing as anyone, but it has been pointed out that a key reason for the infamous delays in the past was Lutfur Rahman supporters invading counts and intimidating council staff - which is both not such a laughing matter, and hopefully at least largely in the past now. Well we will see. If they are the last to declare this Thursday, we will know something else is going on, like general incompetence.

Them being last wouldn't be the sign of a problem given the size of the electorate (c. 7400). Orwell, East Suffolk (electorate c. 7800) is a bit bigger and South Lakeland (c. 4700) is quite smaller. A sample of 3 isn't enough to find a problem. (Scotland usually counts the day after).

The manic effort to be the first to declare of places like Sunderland at GEs has never impressed me. Don't equate competence with speed!

Just been to vote in Inverness West.
Over the last couple of days, the Lib Dems brought out their big guns: hand-written letters from the candidate saying how much he loves the local area, along with a glowing endorsement from the very popular incumbent Lib Dem councillor (a former provost of Inverness). Saving their best til the very end I guess.
I've also been surprised by how many stakeboards have gone up on lampposts for such a low-key election. Lib Dems and SNP predominated, although there were also plenty from the Tories and even one or two from the Greens. And when I was walking home from the polling station the SNP candidate was being driven around giving her election pitch over a megaphone. So it's ended up being more of a campaign than I thought it would. In fact, it was more energetic than the Holyrood election a few months ago!
I still think it will be very close between the Lib Dem and the Independent, but I'm none the wiser as to which one is favoured to win than I was a few weeks ago!

The Boundary Estate in this ward was the subject of a Jago Hazzard video today: Despite which he states that the fictional Jago based on the historic Old Nichol area here was not the inspiration for his YouTube persona. As a subscriber to his channel, and being aware of A Child of the Jago (Radio 4 serialised it in the days when they had such things between the end of Today and the news at 9am) I did wonder, but in which case where did he get the name from?Isn't it a Cornish alternative for James?

It is. A common surname in Cornwall, but AFAIK less common as a first name.

Yes, a major figure at the club, he was the predecessor to Dave Sexton and put together the basis of that team and the style of play. Came back later briefly.

Presumably the 3 English contests are counting tonight and the 3 Scottish ones tomorrow? Tower Hamlets have started their count.
