Jeffrey Donaldson was the only candidate for leader of the DUP, so a by-election is now an inevitability.

Not actually necessary until he’s co-opted/elected to the assembly but

If he wants to be MLA for Lagan Valley, he'd have to persuade one of the two DUP MLAs to resign for him. That would be Edwin Poots MLA (the leader for 21 days who Donaldson pushed out), and Paul Givan MLA (the First Minister for a week who has also been ordered to resign). So good luck with that.

Thought it was already established that it doesn't have to be a Lagan Valley MLA, could be one from the DUP elsewhere?

I take it that: a) You can't 'double-hat' in Northern Ireland b) It's assumed essential that the leader of the DUP has to be in the Assembly (& First Minister) rather than at Westminster

Could he arrange to try and swap with one of the others?

Looking at other parties, Colum Eastwood is leading SDLP from Westminster.

He is not really needed as much in Westminster now the Tories have chucked the DUP into the dustbin of history, and he would certainly be there more than SinnFein if he spent more time in his constituency!

He has made it clear that he intends to be First Minister. As long as Sinn Fein agree. That means a by election for the Westminster seat whatever happens.

Which is ironic because I believe he challenged the last leader on the basis that an Irish Nationalist party couldn't be led from Westminster. CatholicLeft probably knows more?

Could he arrange to try and swap with one of the others? Yes but possibly a hard sell as a by-election could feasibly be lost even if its unlikely, while the Assembly co-option is guaranteed and the STV system guarantees re-election even on a difficult day.

You can discuss the safety of seats under STV with Brenda Hale!

(leadership name recognition like a camera flash). To be fair with only two DUPs it is a lot safer, although maybe the "Return of the UUP" is on the cards

Will the nationalists stand ? They didn't in North Down and East Belfast last time when they smelt unionist blood. They took close to 3,000 votes in 2019.
It could go a long way helping Alliance take it from the DUP
