Yes, it is, in terms of a national system paid for by taxation. That is the basis of the NHS model. How it is implemented is another matter - and it's refusal to get to grips with prioritisation. All systems prioritise but in the case of NHS it is a case of muddling along. And not being open about having any clear priorities at all.

Everything’s a priority There are lots of things I would be happy to simply remove from NHS provision Including fertility treatments and gender reassignment If you want them start a crowd funder And others would have different views. They are very different issues and it's always a case of weighing up consequences and alternatives. Both are already heavily rationed, though, in terms of both access and provision. And make up a very small part of NHS spending. The point is that the NHS does acute care well, and ongoing minor issues not requiring surgery but is less successful with routine non-urgent surgical procedures. And it is the amount of money needed to reduce the long waiting lists for those which may require significant increases in taxation. The additional costs of administration of the internal market and commissioning and funding the amount of ambulance-chasing claims need serious consideration too. And of course, our willingness to extend life without considering how we deal with long term limiting conditions which is impossible to even have a reasonable conversation about without someone shrieking EUGENICS at you.

From Paul Halloran's facebook:
"A petition has been created to ask the Conservative Party to consider me as their candidate for Batley & Spen. This hasn’t been created, nor is administered by myself. It’s created by people who like you & I care about the area. My opinion is very simple, I will talk to anyone who wants to see our area be the place it can & should be. It’s not about party politics. If people choose to sign it that is their prerogative. There are though a lot of petty jealousies with certain individuals in the local Conservative party, some of whom are putting themselves forward as candidates. So, agendas are at play. Sadly, it seems that the party at present are too intransigent to speak with me to find a consensus for the benefit of all of us. To date, I have been approached by 2 national parties (not the Conservatives) & 1 regional party. I’ve have talked to each out of common courtesy but more importantly about their thoughts on Batley & Spen - because that is all that matters. There are certain issues going forward, which may become apparent that certain parties don’t want to discuss. My intention is to find out through dialogue who will & who wont deal with some of the issues which affect us all. Being honest I have found it quite distasteful that a local young man, his partner & children are in hiding fearing for their lives & some people are wetting themselves about the political games that are being played. The life of this young man & his family should be at the forefront of our minds & we need to know from whichever party whether they will offer unequivocal support to him & his family or they will want to conveniently not talk about it as a way to ‘buy’ votes."
...
A. Is the any chance that he'll be selected as the Tory candidate?
B. Do you think the bolded part is true? I assume Reform UK may have contacted him, but apart from that?

I thought he was referring to the Batley teacher who showed the Mohamed cartoons a couple of months ago inews.co.uk/news/education/batley-grammar-school-teacher-cartoon-prophet-mohamed-fears-for-his-life-934648

The Northern Independence Party wouldn't touch him, being avowedly left(wing. The Yorkshire Party is a more broad church group. Again, though, it is his claim, so who knows?

How big an issue will the proposal for voter ID in future elections be? A proportion of the current electorate are unlikely to have a driving licence or a passport or any other form of photo ID?

My guess is, unless the government have chosen to prioritise this Bill, it’ll not be a big influence as most regular voters will either be unaware of it or supportive of the principle of stopping voter fraud. If it were to play then Labour certainly have a potential opening amongst younger Muslim women voters as there is the cultural issue that in the more adherent families women aren’t allowed to have their own identities - they don’t drive, have their own bank accounts, etc. This could be campaigned on as disenfranchising that community just as the Democrats argue voter ID has a greater adverse impact on African American and Latino voters.

I would have thought it was simply likely to increase numbers of postal votes in the case of Muslim communities though the most conservative - like conservative Christians - do not vote.

I’ve never met a conservative Christian who didn’t vote on principle. And only ever heard of one (who may have been teasing an impertinent interviewer). Evelyn Waugh, on being quizzed, replied that he didn’t vote , as he didn’t presume to advise Her Majesty on her choice of servants.

Opposition parties should indeed swing behind free ID for elections - requiring a driving licence or passport is GOP-style vote suppression, pure and simple.
