It appears the Castle Point Council has decided to fill the two casual vacancies in the Boyce and St Georges ward as by-elections separate from the 2020 vacancies (extended to 2021) rather than as "double" elections. This increases the number of District Council seats contested in by-elections from 163 to 165 and reduces the number of "double" elections from 37 to 35. I have therefore amended the two relevant posts to reflect this.
There are 165 District Council seats being contested in by-elections within 162 wards with East Staffordshire: Eaton Park, South Derbyshire: Hilton and Test Valley: Chilworth, Nursling & Rownhams each having 2 vacancies. In addition there are 35 "double" District Council vacancies covered in another posting. Conservatives are defending 74 seats, Labour 33, Liberal Democrats 23 along with Independents 17, Localists 14, Green 3 and UKIP 1.
Because of the large number of vacancies each by-election is not listed individually but as a summary by the 24 Counties where there are by-elections.
It has been confirmed there is no election in Epping Forest: Royland on 06 May.
114 of the vacancies occurred following the resignation of the previous Councillor, including 6 having been elected an MP, 48 have died and 3 disqualified.
With all nominations now in, the Conservatives are contesting 164 seats (the exception Ashfield: Annesley & Kirby Woodhouse is being defended by Ashfield Independents), Labour 147 (89% of the seats ), Liberal Democrats 101 (61%) and Greens 78 (48%). There are 60 Independent candidates contesting 47 seats, 15 localists, 5 representing Reform, 3 UKIP and 15 others including No Description - a total of 588 candidates or an average of a little over 3½ per seat.
All the 165 seats are being contested. There will be some changes of representation as the defending party is not contesting the election.
- Labour is not defending Bassetlaw: Ranskill, there is no Liberal Democrat candidate in Mendip: St Thomas' where a candidate was rejected due to an issue with the home address whilst UKIP is not defending its only such seat in Tendring: West Clacton & Jaywick Sands.
- there are 7 seats currently held by Independents where no Independent is standing - Bassetlaw: Sutton, East Devon: Whimple & Rockbeare, Great Yarmouth: Ormesby, Rossendale: Stackstead, South Cambridgeshire: Girton, West Suffolk: Clare, Hundon & Kedlington as well as the second seat in East Staffordshire: Eaton Park.
- there are also 3 held by "localists" where there is no defending candidate - Allerdale: Aspatria (Putting Cumbria First), Selby: Cambleforth & Carlton (Yorkshire Party) and Test Valley: Andover St Mary's (Andover Alliance).
So 13 seats will change hands before a vote is cast - nearly 8% of the 165 District Council seats being contested.
