Now comes the tricky bit, trying to work out a) when these by-elections were last held and b) finding the results last time.

There were 35 "double" District Council by-elections on 06 May with the Conservatives winning 22 by-election seats (up net 6), Labour 5 (down 4), Liberal Democrat 5 (down net 1), Greens 1 (down 1) together with 2 Localists (up 1) whilst Independents lost their only seat. Analysis is complicated because in "double" elections interest split results can occur. The convention used is that the top placed candidate wins the annual seat with the runner-up the by-election seat, even though the retiring Councillor may continue for a shorter term.
