He hummed and hawed about it, but when I mentioned that I was standing for the Senedd he took a "in for a penny" approached and filed his nomination and clearly it paid off.

There were 164 District Council seats contested in by-elections within 161 wards with East Staffordshire: Eaton Park, South Derbyshire: Hilton and Test Valley: Chilworth, Nursling & Rownhams each having 2 vacancies. The contest in Tandridge: Felbridge was countermanded following the death of one of the candidates. The Conservative won 117 seats (up net 44), Labour 18 (down net 15), Liberal Democrats 15 (down net 8), Greens 4 (up 1), Localists 4 (down 10), Independents 6 (down net 11) whilst UKIP lost it inly seat. Conservatives gained 48 seats and lost 4. The seats lost were: * South Lakeland: Broughton & Coniston (Cumbria) to Liberal Democrat * Wealdon: Hailsham North (East Sussex) to Liberal Democrat * Maldon: Tollesbury (Essex) to Independent * Hertsmere: Borehamwood Kenilworth (Hertsfordshire) to Labour. Labour gained 5 seats and lost 20. The seats gained in addition to Hertsmere: Borehamwood were: * Allerdale: St John's (Cumbria) from Independent * Bolsover: Pinxton (Derbyshire) from Localist Independent * Rossendale: Stackstead (Lancashire) from Independent * East Staffordshire: Eaton Park (Staffordshire) from Independent. Liberal Democrats gained the 2 seats from Conservatives but lost 10 seats, all to the Conservatives. Greens gained a seat in Thanet: Central Harbour (Kent) from Labour. UKIP lost its only seat in Tendring: West Clacton & Jaywick Sands (Essex) to Conservative. Localist lost 10 seats and made no gains. Independents gained 3 seats but lost 14. In addition to gaining Maldon: Tollesbury from the Conservatives, the other gains were: *Allerdale: Aspatria (Cumbria) from a Localist (Putting Cumbria First) *Tendring: Eastcliffe (Essex) from a Localist (Holland-on-Sea and Eastcliffe Matters) These contests saw 59 seats out of 164 changing hands, a rate of 36%.
