The Bishop is broadly correct: elections in Northern Ireland operate under different political 'rules.' Parliamentary elections don’t. That is indeed the case. Except they aren't in GB and vote shares for major parties should exclude them.

Bish means, as you very well know, that in NI normal socio-economic debate (as in most of GB) plays very much second fiddle to the constitutional question, with elections having a large element of sectarian headcount about them. Electoral law may be the same as in the rest of the UK, but the people operating under that law are a very different community of folk.

And in a more concrete sense, the main GB-wide parties don't stand there (save for mostly token Tory and Green candidates in *some* seats)

Aren't the NI Greens a separate party from the GPEW? It has been a regional branch of the Green Party of Ireland for 15 years. It's never been affiliated with any of the Green parties on the mainland. It's been affiliated with GPEW and SGP in a similar way to the way they are affiliated with each other, despite not having its origins as a part of the original PEOPLE/Ecology/Green Party.

Uh huh. So what happens now? Nothing unless the police can find enough evidence to charge said candidate with election expenses fraud or a related offence. The deadline for election petitions in relation to this Hartlepool by-election has long since passed.

Why is this only coming out now? The expenses should have been returned a while ago shouldn't they?

The deadline for election petitions in relation to this Hartlepool by-election has long since passed. It seems Rayner is after Boris for breach of ministerial code... But as we know, the PM marks his own homework on that. Tick.

The deadline is from when the expenses are published not polling day, and I think it's six months.

Its somewhat complicated depending on the circumstances, the provisions can be found here but it is certainly a lot less generous than six months.

Uh huh. So what happens now? Boris Johnson resigns, just like every minister who breaks the ministerial code. That's right, isn't it? Well, isn't it?

His spin before the last GE that he had been "cleared" looks all the more disgraceful. An absolutely shameful episode for the party all round, and one reason why its actually quite hard to argue that the byelection outcome wasn't deserved.

Who could have guessed the position the two parties would be in now about 18 months after this by-election?
