For some reason the Sky anchor keeps saying that the turnout at the General Election was 30%

Yet again they are telling us that the turnout is "42.55%" instead of actually telling us. What is the actual turnout? What is the electorate? In other words, what is 42.55% of what?

I've searched for the electorate data but can't find it. My experience as a candidate was that the Returning Officer almost always announced the verification total as a percentage (to 2 decimal places) - as if they think that we want to know a percentage - and then I would always have to go to the R.O. and ask him/her specifically what the number was. It's as if the R.O. has had his brain removed ex-officio and that they do it merely because some idiot (perhaps from the Electoral Commission) "advised" them to do it that way.

Sky News footage of the count shows that the Independent candidate Sam Lee has a large pile of votes - perhaps she will be in 3rd place?

The dawning result of a Tory-gain with strong lead will quite inevitably lead to some kind of "Progressive Alliance" of Lab.&LD&GP&SNP&PC (what i had recommended for those parties already since 2010). Inclusive implementing PR or STV.

Starmer really does deserve flak for having called this by election.
Don't think when makes a lot of difference, Hartlepool is just reflecting a North East trend this year, so delaying the election a few months wouldn't have made any difference.
Starmer is ineffective in the North East, unlike Boris. Add in Brexit, Vaccine bounce, view Labour is a middle class party now, Hartlepool was a hiding to nothing for him.
Its not just Starmer, its Labour as a whole that need to think what it stands for, is it a South East England party or a national one?

If all these rumours are even just half way true from places like Hartlepool and Sunderland then this is an existential crisis for Labour . The Labour brand is becoming toxic in places like these and voters are turning out to vote 'anti-Labour' whether it is Tory, lib dem or independent .
Its Labour's Scotland moment in the North East, will they learn from the Scottish experience? Probably not.

Outside London they're pretty rubbish as a South East party But generally never ever count out Labour

On what timescale?
15 to 20 years?

Fair on London.
Labour won't vanish but I think the loss of votes outside London will be permanent in places so Labour needs to reassess.
