Well, in Cardiff the BCW has clearly tried to preserve something like the existing seat pattern and I did the same in my counter-suggestion upthread.
But in the Swansea area, the BCW has jettisoned the existing pattern so here, I've taken licence to do the same. How's this for a plan with only one Swansea seat rather than the three in the BCE scheme? (The map also shows the reduced Llanelli seat I suggested earlier.)
Llanelli - 69895.
Gower - 76801. Swansea - 73412. Neath - 76841.

The BCW scheme assigns 12 seats to the combined area of BG/Caerphilly/Cardiff/MT/Newport/RCT/VoG. Here's an alternative that also assigns 12 seats to the identical area but with fewer boundary-crossings, only one orphan ward and no detached parts. Changes from the BCW scheme are noted.
Blaenau Gwent and Rhymney - 71079. As per BCW but can't we think of a better name for it? Is 'Abertillery' out of the question?
Cardiff Central - 69813. Loses Rumney and Llanrumney, gains Riverside. Note all the Cardiff seats are small in this scheme. Cardiff North - 70054. Loses Llandaff N and Taff's Well; gains Llanrumney. Now contained wholly within Cardiff.
Cardiff South and Penarth - 70394. Loses Dinas Powys, gains Rumney (and thus now not divided). Cardiff West - 70645. Loses Riverside and Pont-y-Clun, gains Llandaff N and Dinas Powys (the latter now the only orphan ward in this area).
Islwyn - 74298. As the BCW had it with the addition of Nelson ward. Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare - 74805. Loses its sole Caerphilly ward, gains Aberaman. Newport East - 76159. As per BCW. Newport West and Caerphilly - 74394. Likewise.
Pontypridd - 73003. Loses the Aberaman wards, gains two wards from Cardiff seats. Rhondda - 71684. As per BCW.
Vale of Glamorgan - 70426. Also as per BCW.
That's an improvement, but Llanharan still has no road link to the Rhondda.

Here's another go at Cardiff, this time taking in Marshfield ward from Newport. 2 Cardiff South and Penarth 71147 Yes 3 Cardiff North West 71139 Yes 4 Cardiff Central 73145 Yes 5 Cardiff North East 70372 Yes This then allows a chain of easy moves that improve the BCW's scheme: Llanbradach back into Newport West and Caerphilly, Nelson de-orphaned, what normal people call Aberdare reunited, and Pontyclun and Taff's Well kept in Pontypridd.

There seems to be a strange devotion to the short-lived and long-forgotten districts e.g. Delyn, Preseli, Dinefwr, Aberconwy and now Glyndwr. Some of these may still be used locally but I'm fairly sure residents are more likely to recognise major town names or old county names, e.g. Delyn becomes Flint or West Flintshire, Preseli becomes North Pembrokeshire etc Accept the general point but Aberconwy dates to the 12th century! So not just the District Council. And some of us think the current local authority should be Aberconwy rather than Conwy. the current Aberconwy constituency would be called Conwy if the then commission had had their way. The alternative name was pressed upon them at the local hearing. (While not very similar to the previous Conwy constituency and covering less than half the council area, it is exactly coterminous to the former Aberconwy district. This doesn't apply to the constituency proposed here, of course.)

The advantage of some of these names (Aberconwy/ Preseli/ Delyn etc.) is that they're the same in English and Welsh.

Ok - but do not the proposals restore the Labour voting districts removed from the seat by the 1983 Boundary Review? No. The area removed from the constituency in 1983 was Penderyn and Cefn-coed-y-cymmer, added to Cynon Valley and Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney respectively. How far back does your memory of parliamentary by-elections go? Were you properly aware of B&R in 1985? (My first one was Bermondsey 1983).

I became vaguely aware of politics and remember the 1983 general election very well, but can't place any specific early memory of a byelection. Incidentally the biggest area taken out of the old Brecon and Radnor constituency went into Blaenau Gwent.

I remember the Bermondsey by-election very well but was barely aware of Brecon & Radnor at the time. I assume this is because of the heavy coverage of the former on the local London news. I have some recollection of news coverage of the slightly earlier Peckham by-election as well.

I think I was paying attention to things at the time of Brecon and Radnor. I certainly remember the Knowsley North byelection of 1986 because it was all over the local news (mostly the stramash over selection of a candidate). Was very interested from 1987 onwards.

Maggie having a row with Reg Simmerson. Ah, Reginald Simmerson. Multiple by election candidate and Conservative/Ind Conservative councillor for the Avonmore ward of Hammersmith & Fulham council 1968-74.
Initially de-selected for the 1971 elections, he disputed the result , but got back onto the ballot when one of the two selected candidates died a few weeks before polling day. He had also unsuccessfully challenged for the chairmanship of the local Association.
However....in August of the same year he was expelled from the local Conservative Association for standing against the official Conservative candidate in the Greenwich by-election, and carried on standing in by elections as a Democratic Conservative opposed to immigration and the Common Market.
In 1974 he polled 65 votes in the Avonmore ward as a "Powellite Conservative".

Reg Simmerson, who was from Sheffield, was a chartered accountant and lecturer. He suffered from emphysema for many years and died in December 1998 (being a member of the UK Independence Party at the time). He spent most of his retirement writing letters to newspapers.

His wife was a character too by all accounts, I seem to remember her standing in Chiswick Homefields ward of LB of Hounslow. campaignforanindependentbritain.org.uk/betty-simmerson-rip/
