I'm not claiming to know the area but although I can see that Lightcliffe might be thought of as part of Brighouse, Hipperholme is clearly separate (and a satellite background check tends to confirm this impression). And just shifting Hipperholme surely means moving hardly more, if any more, electors than the eastern half of Luddendenfoot. And, as YL points out, splitting the latter ward means that the upper Calder Valley area is virtually inaccessible from the rest of the seat.
In Rule 5 terms, moving Hipperholme seems much the better solution. If this makes life harder for some political party or candidate, so be it: it's not a relevant consideration.

Hipperholme is not clearly separate. Have you studied roads, bus routes, school catchment areas, shopping centres, historical links? The ward that is ripe for a split is Luddenden Foot. Wainstalls and Luddenden both look towards Halifax. Midgley looks towards Sowerby Bridge. It's a mish-mash ward that was created to equalise numbers. At the 1982 Inquiry Cllr Allan Pettengell (Lab, Ludd Foot) argued that Sowerby Bridge should be included in Calder Valley and that Hipperholme & Lightcliffe should be transferred to Halifax. He was rebutted by Donald Thompson, Shirley Summerskill and others. The three Brighouse wards sit together and any attempt to split will garner far more opposition than splitting part of Luddenden Foot. All I can say is that distance sometimes lends clarity and from my study in Islington Hipperholme definitely looks like a separate place from Brighouse and distinctly nearer to Halifax than it is to Brighouse. It is also very close to Northowram, which is going to be in the Halifax seat on any showing. Moreover it is currently at one extreme end of the sprawling Calder Valley seat and can be removed without disrupting that seat's internal lines of communication in any way (in complete contrast to the eastern end of Luddendenfoot, the removal of which practically cuts Calder Valley in two so far as internal comms are concerned).
On an earlier post you referred to obvious partisan considerations. However, they are are not obvious to me: but whatever they may be, are you sure that they are not the driver here?

The proposal to split Luddenden Foot was/is a Labour proposal so no partisanship on my part.

With 5 minutes to go, here's a teaser for anyone staying up:
There are 3 ward splits proposed - one each in Kirklees, Leeds and Sheffield.

Sheffield - Richmond split between Heeley and South East with Intake and Hollins End staying in Heeley and the rest (ie Richmond proper) joining SE.
Leeds - Gipton & Harehills split between Leeds Central and Leeds East with Harehills being in Central and Gipton being in East.
Kirklees - Dalton split between Huddersfield and Dewsbury with Kirkheaton joining Dewsbury and the rest staying in Huddersfield.

Other notable points:
- East Riding & Hull treated together as a sub-region - Doncaster East & Axholme is created - Wickersley gore continues in Rotherham, split between Rotherham, Rother Valley (which are both just aligned to new wards) and a new Rawmarsh and Consibrough seat - Sheffield and Barnsley is largely as per the forum consensus - Ossett and Denby Dale is created, including Wakefield South and Rural - Batley and Heckmondwike is created - Rothwell becomes part of Wakefield along with the two Outwood wards - Headingley is created (without the Leeds prefix) - Halifax and Calder Valley are a mess - Kippax & Methley joins Selby, Garforth & Swillington joins Leeds East

Also:
- Thirsk and Malton is expanded slightly, taking in Bedale and Tanfield - Wetherby and Easingwold takes 2 wards from Selby, 2 from Leeds, 6 from Harrogate and 3 from Hambleton - Hull East takes South East Holderness - Goole and Haltemprice is created, taking in Cottingham but not the rest of Haltemprice - South Humber is created from leftovers - Morley is Morley x2, Ardlsey, Middleton Park - Pudsey is Pudsey, Calverley and Farsley, Bramley and Stanningley, Farnley and Wortley - Leeds North West is Guiseley and Rawdon, Otley and Yeadon, Horsforth, Adel and Wharfedale - Headingley is Weetwood, Headingley and Hyde Park, Kirkstall, Armley

I think South Yorkshire is as my most recent plan except for Wickersley North and Sitwell.

It's Batley & Hipperholme, not Batley & Heckmondwike: the two Batley wards, Birstall & Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton, Liversedge & Gomersal plus Hipperholme & Lightcliffe orphaned.
Halifax gains Brighouse (including Rastrick) but loses Warley and Sowerby Bridge.

Yes apologies, I got my H's mixed up. It's Batley and Hipperholme. Halifax swaps Sowerby Bridge and Warley fro Brighouse and Rastrick with Calder Valley.

Dear God what have they done to Doncaster? Not an area I know well but looks decidedly iffy?

I posted this in the wrong thread a few minutes ago.... Sheffield (and Penistone) initial proposals, using the wonderful Boundary Assistant: (Richmond split is approximate)

Only four seats with a Leeds prefix. Seems odd to name the effective Leeds West seat as Headingley but use the Leeds North West name for a seat which is substantially not Leeds proper

The new Ossett and Denby Dale must be a fairly nailed on Tory seat. I suspect there might be a bit of a fight between the current MPs for Dewsbury and Wakefield over who gets to inherit it.

The Leeds naming is a bit odd. It’s not like Headingley has a strong identity or history as an independent town. Why not do a Sheffield and mix compass points and suburbs and so call it Leeds Headingley (or just Leeds West)?
I also think Leeds North West could be improved by calling it Aireborough and Wharfedale, but that would remove the Leeds link for those unfamiliar with the area.

Which wards will be included in this new seat? Ossett, Horbury & South Ossett, Wakefield South, Wakefield Rural, Denby Dale and Kirkburton.
