Did the BCE take a leaf out of the Canadian Boundary Commissions' books? Canadian ridings are known for having excessively long names like "Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Lakes" "West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country" is a classic, still in use.

In recent years the Boundary Commission has proven itself to be irredeemably incompetent. I’ve began to think it should be abolished and it’s functions handed over to a joint committee of Parliament. That strikes me as a recipe for incumbent protection gerrymanders. And, while I'm sure there are justified criticisms (and not just about names) I think this is way better than what the two zombie reviews produced.

The Commission can only work within the restrictions set upon them; get politicians to create better legislation and the perimeters would be kinder for creating constituencies.

Having read right through the English report, I reckon there are only 2 significant changes, one in Southend, and one in Cumbria.
There are a handful of ward swaps in the south, but they don't look significant. And some fiddling with split wards in Yorkshire.

I suspect in practice you would end up a similar process to that which exists in France, and that is not a very good idea.

Interestingly on their election night coverage I noticed that Sky News did a lot of abbreviations or shortenings of constituency names when displaying their battleground boards. I suggest we all just adopt them and refuse to use the 'official' names. Also I think the BBC, Sky, or both always put the compass points last, as a simple rule, none of this arbitrary county vs borough nonsense (because who cares which is which). It does lead to gems such as ‘Ulster Mid’ and ‘Tyneside North’, as well as ‘Uxbridge and Ruislip South’ and ‘Norfolk South West’, and we can look forward to ‘Bedfordshire Mid’, but in any case a blanket rule is just simpler.

They used "Ribble South" one year.

Not to forget Yorkshire East.
There's a media guide from... Parliament I think... that's responsible for all these and that most bizarrely also files Torridge and West Devon under D as Devon West & Torridge.

They've called "Blackpool South" a constituency that comprises 80% of the council area. Just call it "Blackpool"!

The final proposals for Croydon are slightly better than the revised recommendations, because they have correctlyified the names. Croydon West is going to be called Croydon West instead of Croydon West and South Norwood; Streatham and Croydon North will not be called Streatham and Norbury.

"Doncaster East and Axholme" has been renamed "Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme" Another pointless change that unnecessarily makes the name of the constituency longer than it needs to be. ”Isle”? I thought Doncaster was inland.

”Isle”? I thought Doncaster was inland. Like Dogs. Or Thanet. More like Ely: it's an area of land slightly above sea level surrounded by reclaimed marshes. So wait a few decades and it might be a proper island. Actually, 4m of sea level rise makes all of Axholme, Ely and Thanet into proper islands.
