A Fox News host for the last 8 years who once spent TWO WEEKS at #1 on the NYT best-sellers list (as you can glean from the President-elect’s statement). He may be great at the job. I wonder if we will have the pleasure of viewing some of his Fox News “best bits” before too long?? For starters, he apparently doesn’t believe in germs and hasn’t washed his hands in 10 years: Source: www.theguardian.com/media/2019/feb/11/germs-are-not-real-fox-news-host-pete-hegseth

He does clearly have a significant military history so it’s not like a TV personality being randomly chosen for the job. However whether he’s appropriate for the Secretary role who knows?

Musk and Ramaswamy will (if confirmed by the Senate??) lead a new US Government Department: There’s some confusion as to whether this is an “official” position requiring Senate confirmation or just an advisory role to the President which doesn’t. Some journalists are edging towards the latter as Musk would be tied up in ethical red tape almost permanently because of his diverse business interests. There’s a potential problem with the SecDef nomination as well; he brags on Fox News that he’s on the active reserve list which would require a waiver from the Senator before he can hold a civilian position.

He's still younger than Ed Markey (78), Richard Blumenthal (78), Dick Durbin (79), Angus King (80), Jim Risch (81), Mitch McConnell (82), Bernie Sanders (83), and Chuck Grassley (91).

I agree and he’s term limited out of the governorship in 26. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did based on an interview he did with a local media outlet in Ohio this year in which he described being a Senator as the most enjoyable job he’d had in politics and that he did still miss parts of it.

Hardly an original observation by this point, but a Department of Government Efficiency with two heads is quite unintentionally amusing.

Muskrat is already referring to himself as “Deputy Doge”, and has designed a departmental logo with a dog front and centre, which suggests he may not be taking altogether seriously.

Which is interesting because the consensus amongst Senators in recent years that are former governors seems to be that they found being a Governor far more enjoyable as they got so much more done compared to the gridlock you need to deal with as being part of DC, Joe Manchin, Angus King and others have spoken about it quite openly. There also seems to have been a drop in Governors going for the Senate in recent years even when term limited or out of office Although Mike DeWine probably remembers the Senate from a time when things weren’t quite as partisan as they are now

And a solid shot at holding the seat in 2026 - which might be at risk in a Trump midterm.

Ohio’s rightward shift isn’t showing much sign of reversing course so I think it’s a real long shot, however depending on the candidates maybe not entirely impossible. Certainly the Democrats will need to target a couple of longer shots if they want to give regaining the majority a serious go in 2026, with Maine and North Carolina being the only clear targets (and Maine is tough if Susan Collins runs again regardless of the circumstances)

The rural South for the most part hasn't shifted hard right this time, and those parts of it that have didn't shift right in 2004. There was no difference in movement between non-college-educated and college-educated whites in 2004. One obvious similarity, the NYC area moving right, isn't mentioned.
