Good lord, you see some nonsense on here. One is going to struggle to find any politician in the Western world who hasn’t had friuty things to say in response to Donald Trump. For a man who was called to the Bar at 22 then got a Masters in Law from Harvard at 24 yrs old, & now FS, to call him stupid...well you'd have to be an idiot yrself to do that. As with Diane Abbott seems that no matter how well a black person has done to get where they are and hold their position, their opinions are exaggerated, twisted, conflated, deliberately misunderstood & they are called thick as a result. That post was liked by doktorb🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ and I also think there is much merit to it. Of course Lammy has made some performative comments to appeal to his base, and as with Abbot his base is black people including thick black people. But Lammy is clearly far from thick and its hard to read all the assertions that he is without beginning to detect a smell of racism. Now Dawn Butler, that is another matter. And Rishi Sunak was not utterly crap because of the colour of his skin.

Hillbilly Elegy about J.D. Vance is pretty interesting and you can see how he became a conservative, emphasising personal responsibility with family members addicted to drugs etc. Worth a watch.

So Biden gets massive round of applause at his speech last night when he pledged to restrict house rental increases to $55 - turns out later that he misspoke and really meant 5%..

Biden now apparently has Covid. Would a serious bout be sufficient to cause him to drop out, I wonder?? Especially given that earlier today he said he’d consider dropping out of the race if a medical condition was diagnosed by doctors. The timing is probably a coincidence of course, but still.

I think the admission that he would quit if it was shown that his health was not up to the job and the COVID diagnosis is softening up things for a withdrawal.

Quoted as saying he "feels OK", so if the narrative was that this was a pathway to lead up to a withdrawal, that wouldnt be the kind of comment they would be putting out there, surely?

Schumer and Jeffries apparently told him to drop out. This makes Biden's candidacy seem more anti-establishment than it is, which could help with the disgruntled Democratic base. Schumer isn't liked all that much.

Convenient in stopping all speeches and interviews - perhaps trying for a re-run of the 2020 election campaign from his basement.

I don't know why he says thick things, because he isn't thick, but he still says them. And unfortunately for him they're often memorably thick, like his white smoke comment or the sociopathic neo-Nazi comment. I have said repeatedly that Lammy isn't thick because I know his background and just have no explanation for how such an intelligent person's propensity to say thick things. Other people know little about his background and only see him say thick things. Drawing that conclusion, without knowing about his background isn't racist - it's logical. Most people who say thick things are actually thick whatever the colour of their skin.

I argued a few pages back that his propensity to say thick things (usually race-baiting) is driven by his inability to let go of his crowd-pleasing urges, which is driven by his fear of being labelled a sell-out ("coconut"). His local icon, Bernie Grant, never "sold out" (and didn't achieve much as a result) and that's who he has to compare himself to. He should instead compare himself to people like Obama.

Most people who say thick things are actually thick whatever the colour of their skin. Almost everyone says at least the occasional stupid thing. I certainly have. A few things: 1. Social media (and the farming of it) now broadcasts one’s stupid remarks and few politicians are brave enough to avoid its use or prepared to adopt the self-control and time (for reflection before posting) to manage its hazards. And some are foolish enough to allow others to control their output. 2. Lammy is noticeable, high profile and subject to some selective attention verging on racism or actual racism. His errors are perhaps presented at a higher volume than those of a routine backbencher and with a more hostile accompaniment. 3. Some of his ‘errors’ are actually fair arguing points. I could understand the reactions to his ‘white saviour’ remarks but, when I thought harder I could see exactly what he was saying. 4. I’m sure he is both conscious of his own background and aware of how some black politicians can lose touch with that. He wouldn’t be alone among politicians in sometimes reflecting thoughts that have a particular audience and nor are black politicians alone in doing that.

The mood music certainly seems to be that Biden is on his way out. That must be a blow to Trump, if indeed it happens.

Never overlook the obvious and never be impressed by bits of paper issued by academics, If it walks like a duck .....? He is, as many of us know, very thick indeed and completely unfitted for ministerial office.
