Come on, what would you rather be doing on your 41st birthday, explaining an indefensible position to a bunch of angry senators or having sent out an almost certainly pre-prepared e-mail while in fact you're doing what everyone who has a New Year's Eve birthday does, having a day long New Year's celebration?! 🤔 Well, it's an excuse at least...

Latest loopy legal case - Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX) tried to persuade Vice-President Pence (who is due to preside over the formal count of the Electoral College on Wednesday) to unilaterally disregard the votes from states the Trump supporters don't like the results from. Pence wouldn't do that, because there's no lawful authority. So Gohmert sued him, seeking a court order requiring him to do so.
The Judge, a Trump appointee, dismissed the case for lack of standing.

To be fair Gohmert does have the ability to make the rest of the GOP conference look positively well balanced and moderate.

They have been suggesting this for a couple days but it looks like The Lincoln Project of going to be putting pressure on the corporate backers of Hawley and Co.

I'm assuming "Jim Crow Caucus" is an insult rather than what they're actually calling themselves? I don't think even these clowns would actually go that far, well maybe Tuberville. The latest news is that a group of 11 Senators led by Ted Cruz are demanding congress establish an "emergency 10 day audit" of the election and if this demand is not met they object to the certification of electors in all "disputed states". Cruz's co-conspirators Blackburn Braun Daines Haggerty Johnson Kennedy Lankford Lummis Marshall Tuberville It is genuinely disappointing to see Lankford on that list, no doubt that the thought of facing GOP primary voters in less than 18 months is his main reason for going along with this. Marshall is a bit of a shock and given how much money McConnell's allies sent to his otherwise under resourced election campaign it is probably safe to say that McConnell is not engaging in a futile round of arm twisting to keep the numbers down.

Sad to see Kennedy on the list as well, as he is a generally level-headed guy, though I suspect his fairly recent conversion from liberal Democrat to conservative Republican makes him nervous of a challenge in Louisiana, where he has some ambition for the governor's office.

Kennedy is up for re-election in 2022. There could be real problems given the Jungle Primary approach used in Louisiana.

Kennedy's "very smart bloke playing dumb" act got old some time ago and he seems to have become a parody of himself. Like Lankford he is up for re-election in 2022.

I’m a tad surprised to see Daines there too. Daines being on the list is another indication that McConnell, having failed to prevent an objection, is not wasting political capital on trying to limit the numbers. Daines is the only Senator, from either party, that is on both the Appropriations and Finance Committees. You would think he owes the leadership, but here we are.

The Republican Party truly is a parody now and, when Trumpism fades, as it will, the rifts will run deep. Cruz is without any kind of honour, given how Trump spoke of his wife and his father. If the Democrats were able to be less proscriptive they could become a home for disgruntled GOP members in the Mid-West and South.

If they were voting with their consciences, only one or two names would be on the list.

Gohmert appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. A 3 judge panel consisting of a Trump appointed judge and two Reagan appointed judges rejected the appeal.

And by all accounts in absolutely withering fashion. Gohmert is now urging Americans take to the streets, speaking on Newsmax he said “Basically, in effect, the ruling would be you’ve got to go to the streets and be as violent as Antifa and BLM,” before the host cut him off.
