Are they looking to join the EU or are they too closely aligned to Russia? Or,a more portent question to ask is will Russia let them join the EU,whether they want to or not? They're not planning on leaving the Soviet Union, let alone joining the European Union. Well, they'll have to wake up to the new world one day,whenever that might be.

I thought that too, because of their response to Ukraine's exploration into EU membership,but maybe Russia's military power is waning as China takes the stage. The expression from my cold dead hands comes to my mind, I could imagine a future where parts of the resource laden eastern wilderness falling under a Chinese sphere of influence easier than I could imagine the loss of Little Russia, far too tied into the national mythology.
Well unless in such a scenario the resurgence of The Middle Kingdom made the Russia itself finally follow the path of Peter and turn to Europe itself Perhaps China will try and aim for annexation of parts of Siberia first, but Russia is past its peak military power.

Belarus has arrested a group of alleged Russian mercenaries. And Kiev has asked for them to be extradited, as several are wanted for activities in the Donbas.

Russia claims they were 'transiting' Belarus to get to Turkey. Interesting denial. It's an illogical route. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53648640Any punts on Lukashenko's final percentage? He has a bit of a penchant for getting just about 80%. To make the results seem a little more plausible, he may got for just below 80% - so I'll say 78%

Apparently there is an exit poll suggesting:
Lukashenka - 79.7% None of the Above - 9.2% Tsikhanouskaya - 6.8%
Not sure who exactly commissioned the poll, or their methodology, but if that's even close to the official result then the Belorussian regime have some serious balls of steel.
I suspect that there will be some relatively small scale protests brutally put down. But if this escalates dramatically we have to be prepared for Russia stepping in to calm the situation, and end Belarus' sovereignty. Unlikely? Yes. But if you'd asked me ten years ago that Russia would annex Crimea and attempt to take Donetsk and Luhansk too I'd not have found it very plausible either.

That's about one per cent less than he claimed in 2010, when he probably did have widespread popularity.

Another pro-western twitterer published an ExitPoll with the incumbent at 16%:
"n = 58,500" (OnLine-polling?)

I'm not sure a poll with him at 16 per cent is much more credible.

And as the EU won't accept this, he'll have to return remorsefully to Putin.

I'm not sure a poll with him at 16 per cent is much more credible. Indeed. It's either pure propaganda or hoax or an OnLine-poll conducted on pro-western sites.
