These scans may be of use. As part of the 1961 Census, a series of 19 leaflets were published giving the population figures and household numbers broken down by ward within Boroughs and Urban Districts, and parishes within Rural Districts. They were just ad hoc leaflets, not officially bound together, and are not part of the full Census publication so are not widely available in reference libraries. I'm not responsible for any OCR errors and note that the early 1960s preceded A4 and the standard paper size was foolscap - so it doesn't quite match current scanners. Leaflet 1: London Leaflet 2: Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Leaflet 3: Wales (excluding Glamorgan and Monmouthshire) Leaflet 4: Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight Leaflet 5: Essex, Middlesex Leaflet 6: Kent, Surrey Leaflet 7: Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire Leaflet 8: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire Leaflet 9: Cumberland, Durham, Northumberland, Westmorland Leaflet 10: Yorkshire West Riding Leaflet 11: Cheshire, Lancashire Leaflet 12: East Sussex, West Sussex Leaflet 13: Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, The Soke of Peterborough Leaflet 14: Yorkshire East Riding, Yorkshire North Riding Leaflet 15: Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire Leaflet 16: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire Leaflet 17: Norfolk, East Suffolk, West Suffolk Leaflet 18: Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Isle of Ely, Lincolnshire (Parts of Holland), Lincolnshire (Parts of Kesteven), Lincolnshire (Parts of Lindsey), Rutland Leaflet 19: Herefordshire, Shropshire

Here's a bonus from the Scottish set. Leaflet 27: Gaelic. Gives the number of people aged 3 and over who could speak Gaelic, and who spoke Gaelic only, by City ward, burgh or County Council Electoral District (in the more Gaelic speaking areas).

I am very pleased to see this decline in Scotland and Wales and deplore the moves to shore up and support such minor languages. I suppose that the three colours represent :- Yellow Can speak the language but not part of ordinary life Brown Can speak the language and use it quite often in ordinary life Red It is my first and prime language for all purposes. In Red areas the effect was to marginalize and restrict the futures of all the young people there as to breaking out into the rest of the world. It encouraged a minority and localist view, a narrow approach to everything, a restrictive and often severe Presbyterian authoritarianism and parochialism and male dominated paternalism that was not good and not nice. I am old enough to remember the fag end of those days with the chained up swings and sleeping in my car because no one would give me a bed for the night on a Sunday because I had 'travelled'! I say this not for the minor effects on outsiders in that area but for the manifest detriment on the lives and prospects of the young and expecially women. Don't be sentimental and starry eyed about this . Those days harboured economic deprivation, hard living and stern unforgiving unpleasantness and rule by elders that few of you would tolerate.

I presume the shadings are based on the proportions of Gaelic speakers in each locality since what you describe is not indicated in the document on which the maps are based. I have some sympathy with your view, especially in relation to the artificial promotiion of these languages. This is why I quoted Georg Ebner's post without his comment expressing the opposite view in order that I could like it. I wasn't seeking to make a major issue of it but just wanted to be clear that I liked the maps and wasn't necessarily endorsing the sentiment expressed alongside them.

I had entirely missed your subtle and nuanced point, and thought you had reposted it 'To like it again'. Not to distance yourself from the comment but to like the maps. That makes a lot of sense but was lost on me. As usual Georg stars at this sort of research and presentation for which we are all most grateful. I am usually very much of his own view on so many things, but not on this particular. I do appreciate why there is that support whilst not sharing it in any way at all.

Germany's spiritual aristocracy was freed from the self-proclaimed "rationalism" to romanticism by Ossianism, W.SCOTT, partly BYRON !!! And at the same time, when those poor backward-areas became (petty)bourgeoisized, even the intellectual upperMiddleClass has become aware, that "progress" and "modernity" might not be so incredibly desirable... "As long as the 'Enlightenment' is not dead - only now is it spreading into the last corner of the earth and penetrating the last social layers - the German thinking between 1770 and 1830 remains the most modern mindset." "We don't have to worry, that the modern world will persist." (GOMEZ DAVILA)

A sad trend: Whatever your sentiments, these maps are fascinating. I hope to get back to researching pre-1973 local election results soon; I'm conscious that I have neglected this for a few months now but it's been hugely important for me to take a step back and live in the real world after devoting so much time to Proboards fora.

A sad trend: Not sure that this necessarily proves the trend is a sad one, given the qualification that it is about monolingualism. In an ideal world gaelic speakers would become bilingual- in practice we know that rarely happens.
