Saddleworth UDC 1959 The Liberals won every ward that was contested, bar one - Springhead Lower - where they didn't field a candidate. DELPH - Lib gain O Sowerbutts, Lib 831 P Kershaw, Lab 457 DOBCROSS - 2 seats - 2 Lib gains G Marsden, Lib 716 E Hobson, Lib 668 *S Buckley, Lab 598 N McConnell, Lab 434 GREENFIELD - Lib gain G Lord, Lib 1068 *G Holtby, Con 990 SPRINGHEAD HIGHER *A Pearson, Con 395 A Wright, Lab 284 SPRINGHEAD LOWER - Lib gain D Dellhide, Lib 747 *C Fitton, Con 614
You've got Springfield Higher with no Liberal candidate here, not Springfield Lower as you state. There's an error somewhere.
Inevitable, isn't it? I meant Springfield Higher had no Liberal candidate.

This event on Friday week may be of interest: Yes, that was brought to my attention. I e-mailed Dr David Jeffery about the Old UK Councils forum and he tells me he has bookmarked it; hopefully it might encourage a few more volunteers to come on board with this huge project. Dr David Jeffery has now joined the Old UK Councils forum, which I'm very happy about.

Hello everyone - it's great (and a bit surreal) to see people talking about my work! I've posted this already on the OldUKCouncils forum, but it might be interest to people here as well: My name is David Jeffery, I am a lecturer in British politics at the University of Liverpool. I am interested in studying the political history of Liverpool and the broader Merseyside area. To that end, I have been collecting Merseyside local election results from 1945 - it's not been easy, as I'm sure you'll all appreciate. Anyway, I thought I'd share my dataset so far with you all, in the hope that a) you find it useful, and b) you might have advice for where I can find information to fill in the blanks. The dataset is a work-in-progress, obviously halted by the virus! I still have a few archives and newspapers to trawl through, but I'd appreciate any advice anybody might have - especially around how to find which wards are in each council (especially rural district councils!) and when internal boundary reforms took place. Also, information on electorate sizes. You can find the links to the dataset and the codebook here: www.david-jeffery.com/merseyside-local-election-results-project/. There is an option to comment on any part of the dataset or the codebook, if you have questions or info. The information is also on GitHub, if you'd prefer that: www.github.com/davidjeffery/Merseyside-Local-Election-Results-1945-2020/And, I'm contactable at djeffery[at]liverpool.ac.uk. I'm also looking forward to following the forums!

Darfield UDC (now part of Barnsley MB)
It appears Labour were given a free run almost every year in the late 1950s and 1960s, but I think the Conservatives missed a trick by not putting up candidates during this period. By 1970 it was too late:

SETTLE RDC 1952 Austwick ward had its first contested election in over half a century after Cllr Mr W.K. Mattinson stood down after 31 years' service. Bryan Braithwate-Exley, a former Yorkshire and England Rugby Union footballer, stood and defeated a farmer by 77 votes to 75. Braithwaite-Exley went on to become a chairman for the council, among many other things. HORNSEA UDC 1949 I haven't found very much at all in the way of election results for this particular district, and from what I can gather it appears to have been fought on non political lines throughout its whole existence. I did find a list of nominees for the 1949 elections. "Loss adjuster", taken literally, is an amusing occupation for an election candidate which perhaps could be used in the US at the present time. I think I would have plumped for the wine and spirit merchant based on occupations alone, how about anyone else? 6 candidates for 4 seats (nominations only): *G Chipperfield, retired schoolmaster John F Cliff, wine and spirit merchant *J Hardaker, company director TS Holyman, advertising manager H Milner, retired farmer G Wood, loss adjuster

I have now extracted all the data I can going back to 1946 for all the West Riding of Yorkshire urban and rural district election results insofar as the British Newspaper Archive covers them, with a lot of help from others. We'll hopefully be gradually able to fill in remaining gaps as time goes by. 1946 was a significant year, as it was the first postwar batch of UDC/RDC elections, therefore there were many more vacancies than usual to fill, and it marked the beginning of party politics in a number of districts, with the Labour Party in particular fielding more candidates than before. oldukcouncils.freeforums.net/board/29/yorkshireoldukcouncils.freeforums.net/board/30/yorkshireNext, onto 1939...

Although the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on Saturday 4 November shows that they were uncontested elections.

NIDDERDALE RDC 1938-1974 oldukcouncils.freeforums.net/thread/2526/nidderdale?page=1&scrollTo=15696(A number of gaps in the data) Nidderdale RDC was created in 1938 out of a merger of Knaresborough RDC and a portion of Great Ouseburn RDC. With that in mind, and the smallness of the electorate in the six parishes in which the number of candidates exceeded the number of vacancies to be filled that year, it is amusing to see the length of these parishes' names. Denby Dale UDC 1938-1974The quality of the available data is perhaps below average for this one, especially for the earlier years. But there is plenty of evidence of keen contests after the war, and it was clearly a battleground between Labour and self-styled Independents in the 1950s - it appears no-one was ever elected as a Conservative. There were also a number of Liberal successes between 1961 and 1970. Labour's best performances were in the final two batches of elections during the Heath government. All in all, a bit of a mish-mash in terms of party strength, which makes it all the more interesting.

Hebden Royd UDC 1937-1974Hebden Royd Urban District was originally comprised of 21 councillors elected in two wards, 12 of the 21 from Hebden Bridge and the other 9 from Mytholmroyd. The top 4 candidates from Hebden Bridge and the top 3 from Mytholmroyd in 1937 were to serve three year terms originally, but the Second World War meant that they didn't have to fight re-election in 1940 or 1943, so their terms continued all the way until 1946. In 1963, the district was divided up into 6 new wards: Birchcliffe, Caldene, Cragg Vale, Fairfield, West End and White Lee. An early feature of elections in this district was the success of the British Legion, whose candidates secured representation through to the late 1950s. The growth of party politics saw the Independents being displaced by the Conservatives as the largest party group in 1955. In the final elections of 1972, Labour gained control. A keenly fought district by both main parties, with Independents and Liberals often holding the balance of power. (1959, 1960 and 1967 results are still to be located). Now found - thank you hullenedge

Colne Valley UDC 1937-1974Colne Valley Urban District was another one of those which came into being through the "Great Amalgamation" of 1937. It was a merger of the old urban districts of Golcar, Linthwaite, Marsden, Scammonden and Slaithwaite. All these became wards of the new district. Press reports don't seem sure as to these wards' official names as they were also often named after points of the compass, and were reported as: Central - Slaithwaite, North - Scammonden, North East - Golcar, South East - Linthwaite, and West - Marsden, ...sometimes with parentheses around the actual place names. They should have just named them after the places, in my own view. It was a very competitive district between Liberals, Labour and Conservatives, just as the parliamentary constituency of the same name was. Plenty of Independents also. Even better is that I found results for every year, although unopposed returns weren't always deemed worthy of reporting.

WETHERBY RDC - WIGHILL PARISH, 1937
There were fewer votes cast in this election than in some of our Vote UK forum polls, but it made the news in the Yorkshire Post. Major John Miles Dawson, County Alderman, who had served the Wighill parish for 37 years, and had never faced opposition before, was defeated by just three votes in a three way contest. He had been chairman of the council and of the Wetherby Bench of Magistrates.
The result: JW Watson 31 *Maj John Miles Dawson 28 J Hilton 20
There is no mention in the article of any of the other parishes within the district. Perhaps they were all unopposed returns, but there may be another mention of them in some other newspaper report I haven't yet seen.

Tony Hill has been very generous in sharing some of his research material collected in the early 1970's for his PhD in electoral statistics. He spent time collecting elections results from local libraries and newspaper offices in Hampshire. Thanks to him I have been able to add quite a lot of information missing from my 1945-72 database covering annual elections. However, Tony extracted quite a few bye-election results which I have put togather to share on this site. These have already been added to the Old Councils Forum. If you have anything to share please contact myself or Swanarcadian. We would be pleased to receive any help.
