Saddleworth UDC 1959 The Liberals won every ward that was contested, bar one - Springhead Lower - where they didn't field a candidate. DELPH - Lib gain O Sowerbutts, Lib 831 P Kershaw, Lab 457 DOBCROSS - 2 seats - 2 Lib gains G Marsden, Lib 716 E Hobson, Lib 668 *S Buckley, Lab 598 N McConnell, Lab 434 GREENFIELD - Lib gain G Lord, Lib 1068 *G Holtby, Con 990 SPRINGHEAD HIGHER *A Pearson, Con 395 A Wright, Lab 284 SPRINGHEAD LOWER - Lib gain D Dellhide, Lib 747 *C Fitton, Con 614
You've got Springfield Higher with no Liberal candidate here, not Springfield Lower as you state. There's an error somewhere.
Inevitable, isn't it? I meant Springfield Higher had no Liberal candidate.

This event on Friday week may be of interest: Yes, that was brought to my attention. I e-mailed Dr David Jeffery about the Old UK Councils forum and he tells me he has bookmarked it; hopefully it might encourage a few more volunteers to come on board with this huge project. Dr David Jeffery has now joined the Old UK Councils forum, which I'm very happy about.

Hello everyone - it's great (and a bit surreal) to see people talking about my work! I've posted this already on the OldUKCouncils forum, but it might be interest to people here as well: My name is David Jeffery, I am a lecturer in British politics at the University of Liverpool. I am interested in studying the political history of Liverpool and the broader Merseyside area. To that end, I have been collecting Merseyside local election results from 1945 - it's not been easy, as I'm sure you'll all appreciate. Anyway, I thought I'd share my dataset so far with you all, in the hope that a) you find it useful, and b) you might have advice for where I can find information to fill in the blanks. The dataset is a work-in-progress, obviously halted by the virus! I still have a few archives and newspapers to trawl through, but I'd appreciate any advice anybody might have - especially around how to find which wards are in each council (especially rural district councils!) and when internal boundary reforms took place. Also, information on electorate sizes. You can find the links to the dataset and the codebook here: www.david-jeffery.com/merseyside-local-election-results-project/. There is an option to comment on any part of the dataset or the codebook, if you have questions or info. The information is also on GitHub, if you'd prefer that: www.github.com/davidjeffery/Merseyside-Local-Election-Results-1945-2020/And, I'm contactable at djeffery[at]liverpool.ac.uk. I'm also looking forward to following the forums!

Darfield UDC (now part of Barnsley MB)
It appears Labour were given a free run almost every year in the late 1950s and 1960s, but I think the Conservatives missed a trick by not putting up candidates during this period. By 1970 it was too late:
1954
3 seats L. Key Lab 1771 J. Schofield Lab 1357 B. Goddard Lab 1352 S. Camplejohn Con 1286
1968
3 seats W. Brookes Lab Unopposed J. Marsden Lab Unopposed M. Upperdine Lab Unopposed
1970

I went to Hooton Pagnell once. It doesn't look as if it's changed since 1953.

SETTLE RDC 1952 Austwick ward had its first contested election in over half a century after Cllr Mr W.K. Mattinson stood down after 31 years' service. Bryan Braithwate-Exley, a former Yorkshire and England Rugby Union footballer, stood and defeated a farmer by 77 votes to 75. Braithwaite-Exley went on to become a chairman for the council, among many other things. HORNSEA UDC 1949 I haven't found very much at all in the way of election results for this particular district, and from what I can gather it appears to have been fought on non political lines throughout its whole existence. I did find a list of nominees for the 1949 elections. "Loss adjuster", taken literally, is an amusing occupation for an election candidate which perhaps could be used in the US at the present time. I think I would have plumped for the wine and spirit merchant based on occupations alone, how about anyone else? 6 candidates for 4 seats (nominations only): *G Chipperfield, retired schoolmaster John F Cliff, wine and spirit merchant *J Hardaker, company director TS Holyman, advertising manager H Milner, retired farmer G Wood, loss adjuster

I have now extracted all the data I can going back to 1946 for all the West Riding of Yorkshire urban and rural district election results insofar as the British Newspaper Archive covers them, with a lot of help from others. We'll hopefully be gradually able to fill in remaining gaps as time goes by. 1946 was a significant year, as it was the first postwar batch of UDC/RDC elections, therefore there were many more vacancies than usual to fill, and it marked the beginning of party politics in a number of districts, with the Labour Party in particular fielding more candidates than before. oldukcouncils.freeforums.net/board/29/yorkshireoldukcouncils.freeforums.net/board/30/yorkshireNext, onto 1939...

Although the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on Saturday 4 November shows that they were uncontested elections.
