I'd guess it will distract from Mrs Kirchner burbling about the Falklands to help her reelection. That should please those of us who support the Falklanders desires not to be thrown out.

When is she up for re-electio? Anything that might help the bitch would not be be pleasing, though its hard to see really how this event could

Great day for Argentina. I presume that after four ballots neither the Milanese or main Brazilian could get the two thirds majority and so Bergoglio emerged as the compromise candidate. A great day for Latin America also and I hope this will lead to an increasing influence from this region in future conclaves. The overrepresentation of Italy and more generally Europe was commented on a bit. Are there any posts that automatically make the holder a cardinal or does the Pope have scope to rebalance the senior archbishoprics to spread them out more?

There are posts that are traditionally held by a cardinal, but ultimately it is up to the Pope who he chooses to become a cardinal.

For reasons that ultimately go back to late Roman administrative structures, there are a lot of prestigious Italian bishoprics, so it's hard to imagine it could ever be rebalanced entirely.

IIRC the Pope will every so many years make some unelevated Archbishops a Cardinal. The current Archbishops of Westminster and Glasgow aren't but the resigned one of Edinburgh/St. Andrews was.

Well thats reason alone to be disapponted by the result. I believe he and Kirchner (both of them) didn't get along well. When she was running for the first time, he apparently argued that women shouldn't enter politics but just supporting and helping to shape men's thinking. He added that "we" all know what happened the last time Argentina had a female President (Elisabelita succeeding Peron). (can we introduce Harriet Harman to him? Just to see who will explode first) But last year during a mass remembering the 30th anniversary of the Falkland conflict, he said "We come to pray for those who have fallen, sons of the country who went out to defend their mother country, to reclaim that which is theirs and was usurped from them." So the plus that he may hate Kirchner is counter balanced by the fact he apprently shares her own view on the Falklands. A no win situation for you (or him).

He can think what he likes about the Falklands. As I am not a Catholic and this is not a Catholic country I couldn't give a flying one what the leader of this particular religious sect thinks on that or any other matter. I would also invoke Stalin as always on these occassions

First Jesuit pope. Also a new name. The last Pope to be the first of his name was John Paul I. That was of course to well used names. The last to use a brand new name (never used again) was Pope Lando/Landus who did 7 months from 913-914. I read that as pope Londo at first (Khunanup will appreciate)

I can easily imagine Peter Jurasik playing a Pope. Though as Wikipedia assures me that there are some real people with the surname Londo, I might be appreciating it for different reasons to the ones you had in mind.

Londo Mollari was a character in the Sci-fi series Babylon 5. Did get to become emperor rather than pope though. Not sure if there was a Star Wars joke as well or if DB was getting the two mixed up

Yeah, I think instead of the papal scull cap we should have outrageous sticking up fans of hair! Now, has there ever been a Pope G'Kar...?
