Repeated ballots where one can change their minds and/or introduce new candidates is not AV. They can't introduce new candidates because all 600,000,000 baptised male Catholics are candidates anyway. The only new candidates will be a few thousand baby Catholics who will be born or baptised in the next few days, but the Cardinals won't know who they are because they are now locked in. While that is perfectly true, it's the sort of comment a deranged purple hippopotamus living on the moon Io would make, because it's completely Roger Irrelevant. It's still true that the Papal election is not AV. Any candidate who had no votes on the first round of an AV election would be eliminated in the first round, and not be able to pick up votes in later ballots.

It's two thirds of the number of voting Cardinals, plus one. The 'plus one' bit was brought in by Pope Paul VI as a precaution against a Cardinal voting for himself. Not possible to vote for themselves - they have to put their own names on one side of the ballot paper and then their preferred candidate on the other.

Do they not understand the concept of a secret ballot?

That is completely contrary to what I have always heard.

That was a section of the Italian armed forces meeting the Vatican police hence the exchange of anthems. A form of official state recognition.

He's 76, will be known as Pope Francis, and is the first ever Latin American Pope.

Great day for Argentina. I presume that after four ballots neither the Milanese or main Brazilian could get the two thirds majority and so Bergoglio emerged as the compromise candidate. A great day for Latin America also and I hope this will lead to an increasing influence from this region in future conclaves.

First Jesuit pope. Also a new name. The last Pope to be the first of his name was John Paul I. That was of course to well used names. The last to use a brand new name (never used again) was Pope Lando/Landus who did 7 months from 913-914.
