I talked to some LD activists in Eastleigh yesterday and most of them thought the Tories would just about hold onto second place. So UKIP obviously did slightly better than a lot of local campaigners were expecting and the Tories worse. Yes I was expecting that too .

With just 10% of the vote overall, did you expect otherwise?? No but with Labour according to some on here at least supposedly coasting to a landslide victory in 2015, there certainly should be. Those that should be are coloured purple instead, but some people seem to think UKIP is only the Tories' problem

not really proves how poor a candidate she was, she bottled (or HQ made her) withdraw from all hustings. Cameron has serious questions to ask why he appointed such an obvious failure like Schapps as chair

This has had quite a profound effect on me. I mentioned way back that I spent quite some time in a alcoholic friendly social environment with Mrs Hutchings at a wedding. I've said how I found her engaging, down to earth, interesting and absolutely non-career politician. I've also said how I disagree with some of what she has said, which taken in any context, was not endearing. She's not a friend - just purely someone I met through chance. The conduit friends aren't even political. I can understand entirely why the Tories grabbed and nurtured her. I can only speak from probably a 4 hour encounter, but despite a few of her utterances, I find it hard to believe she is a nasty human being. She was A listed, and given a prime constituency. She will have encountered little national attention until freak determines she will be the eye of the storm for 3 weeks. She has proved not to be a slick, on message politician, so was obviously told in no uncertain terms not to say anything if found 3rd. This has gone viral. I can only imagine what she is going through. I don't agree with her, and didn't want her to win. If, however, we want normal folk with experience of the world but not blowtorch hardened hacks to stand for Parliament, I cannot imagine a worse advertisement.

Got to admit I felt some sympathy for her after seeing that video

Sandy Walkington (who contested St Albans at the last election for the LDs) on UKIP: sandy4stalbans.org/blog/2013/03/01/the-morning-after-the-night-before/"The UKIP surge is a phenomenon. They are not all unpleasant racists (though I met a couple of those when knocking on doors yesterday). If the traditional parties don’t find the right language with which to speak to people, we cannot be surprised if something else fills the vacuum."

Labour's performance was not by any stretch of the imagination great, but nor was it disastrous. The third party in by-elections is often squeezed, and the disappointing Lib Dem result in Crewe & Nantwich didn't presage a kicking for them in 2010. The result looks bad if you assumed the Lib Dems would no longer get any tactical Labour votes, but that would never have been a sensible assumption. Our vote was already pretty heavily squeezed and the Lib Dems poured in activists. Three weeks in those circumstances wasn't enough to unsqueeze it. Picking O'Farrell didn't pay dividends, but I'm not convinced picking somebody more local would have been better - there's ever chance we'd have been even more marginalised as the media ignored us, and that we'd have done as badly or worse. The LD performance in C&N wasn't disappointing, not least because we avoided a significant third party squeeze.

Tim Farron, on the basis of a percentage drop larger than the Toriess in Eastleigh, thinks the Lib Dems could gain thirty seats at the next election? He really needs some sleep and to drink some decaff.

Don't you love by-elections for all the OTT comments you get from tired emotional politicians !

Surely the Tories can't allow this sort of thing to happen again during a by-election?
