If there was ever a sign of how broken British politics is, Labour voters are now apparently more right wing on the tax and spend than Conservative voters. Lib Dems now the most anti-cuts Party by some distance

I don't know how you read the results of this poll, then, though of course it only tells us what people alleged to support each party are claiming to think, not where each party actually stands. One other interesting conclusion is that Labour is the most pro-cuts party, which maybe is an indication of how much reliance should be put on it.

What it may reflect is a degree of herding - people who support the Tories were pro-cuts when the Tories were pro-cut; now Johnson is claiming to be anti-cut - Mr 'build back better' - then they are miraculously converted to being anti-cut on the basis of whatever.
There are many examples on all sides of this sort of cognitive dissonance...

Yes, this is more an age thing than anything else. Its also quite possible that younger voters are less accepting of the "balance the books" framing in the first place.

I expect quite a few wouldn't be upset to see the end of triple locked pensions, certainly.
(some will argue it will benefit them in due course, but that is still a long time away and they likely have little confidence things will still be the same anyway)

Another question asked by the pollsters:- Public opinion on this is almost certainly impacted by the eye watering sums of money spent due to COVID.

If there was ever a sign of how broken British politics is, Labour voters are now apparently more right wing on the tax and spend than Conservative voters. This is staggering. Not sure quite what it means. I would like to see a poll with the third option ‘neither’. As the binary question perhaps distorts result

Of course, younger Labour-leaning voters may view obvious spending cuts as 'hold down pension increases' and risky tax increases as 'increase income tax on working people like me' whereas elderly Tory voters may see increased spending as 'preserve my pension and pay for my nursing home/NHS treatment' and risky tax increases as 'put up inheritance tax to pay for any of the above'.
I seem to recall previous polling where a plurality of non-working people (mostly retired) were very happy for income tax / NI to be increased, but really unhappy about Inheritance Tax or council tax increases...

This is staggering. Not sure quite what it means. I would like to see a poll with the third option ‘neither’. As the binary question perhaps distorts result It can, but note that ‘don’t know’ is lower for Labour voters, and that usually de facto exists as ‘neither’ when the option is not available. The tax/spend choice is mirrored in the tweet hullenedge posted so it’s not just question wording. Given that the 2019 BES and other polls still show Labour voters as more economically left leaning I think this one poll is a bit of an outlier, but the fact that a credible pollster can produce a result like this just shows how dominated our voting behaviour has become by cultural liberalism vs conservativism.

Also worth mentioning that it doesn’t seem an issue of broad based vs progressive taxation (or ‘raise taxes on thee not me’ as some of our more cynical right wing posters may view it), as Labour voters are apparently more sceptical of capital gains tax than Conservatives. Imagine typing that a few years ago.

For the LDs to be on nearly 40% of the Labour vote isn't bad. Suspiciously good IMO, I bet we're down at least 2 points in their next poll. Still, I'm taking it!

And me - that (even if it is an outlier) puts us back on 2019 GE level
