Nominations for the poll to fill the vacancy in the Coatbridge West ward of North Lanarkshire Council have closed. The by-election was caused by the death of Labour councillor Tom Maginnis. There are 5 candidates:
Baird, Ashley Scottish Conservative and Unionist Docherty, Kevin Scottish Labour Party Love, John Scottish Liberal Democrats Mitchell, Billy UK Independence Party Rolink, Patrick Scottish National Party (SNP)
This is Labour's safest ward in Scotland, achieving 74.8% of the vote in May 2012. It is possible that, had they fielded a third candidate, all three would have been elected.
According to the Notice of Poll, only one of the candidates lives in the ward and that is the Labour candidate, Kevin Docherty. The Conservative lives in Motherwell and the rest are from Airdrie. Patrick Rolink of the SNP was a candidate for Airdrie North last year where the other 2 SNP candidates were elected. He was also an independent candidate for the same ward in 2007. John Love was the Lib Dem councillor for Airdrie South from 2007 until 2012 when he lost his seat to the SNP, who had undernominated in 2007.
Labour did well in 2012, increasing their vote share by 8% with that coming from all quarters. The Tories lost 2.2% to come in at 3%. The SNP dipped from 24.3% to 22.4%. The only time the Lib Dems have fielded a candidate in a Coatbridge ward in recent years was at the 2011 Coatbridge North & Glenboig by-election when they polled 2.67%. UKIP haven't participated in council elections in North Lanarkshire in the last 6 years. The most recent electoral data is from the regional election in the Coatbridge & Chryston SP constituency. UKIP got 72 votes or 0.31%.

The number of first preference votes in the Coatbridge West ward of North Lanarkshire District on 3 May 2012 was:
Lab 2,865, SNP 858, Con 107 (Total 3,830)
In percentage terms this is
Lab 75%, SNP 22%, Con 3%.
Under new arrangements for the publication of information from electronic counts in Scotland, the Returning Officer published a detailed report of the first preferences by ballot box, aggregating smaller boxes to preserve the confidentiality of individual votes. This report enables us to calculate the overall result across six groups of polling districts as follows:
Polling District NL76 (Bargeddie) (Bargeddie and St. Kevin’s Primary Schools, Bargeddie): Lab 343, SNP 164, Con 31 (Total Votes 538) Lab 64%, SNP 30%, Con 6%
Polling Districts NL77 and NL78 (Langloan) (Janet Hamilton Community Centre, Langloan Street and St. Augustine’s Primary School, Henderson Street): Lab 345, SNP 133, Con 9 (Total Votes 487) Lab 71%, SNP 27%, Con 2%
Polling District NL79 (Kirkwood) (Old Monkland Primary School, Craigend Drive): Lab 729, SNP 144, Con 9 (Total Votes 882) Lab 83%, SNP 16%, Con 1%
Polling District NL80 (Dundyvan) (St. Mary’s Primary School, Hozier Street): Lab 280, SNP 94, Con 6 (Total Votes 380) Lab 74%, SNP 25%, Con 2%
Polling District NL81 (Old Monkland) (Old Monkland Community Centre, Marshall Street): Lab 588, SNP 155, Con 19 (Total Votes 762) Lab 70%, SNP 20%, Con 2%
Postal Votes and Manual Entries: Lab 580, SNP 168, Con 33 (Total Votes 781) Lab 74%, SNP 22%, Con 4%
Both Labour candidates lived in Kirkwood polling district (which recorded the highest Labour vote share of all). The SNP candidate came from Airdrie and the Conservative candidate came from Motherwell.

If true this is a massive win for labour
Taylor James Scott @taylorjamesscot Not as high profile as #Eastleigh, but @scottishlabour just won the #coatbridge by-election. Over 2000 votes to Lab, 400 to SNP

Lab 78.8, SNP 16.6, Con 2.6, UKIP 1.2, LD 0.7
I always find it difficult to judge whether the Conservative and Lib Dem votes in these sorts of Scottish contests will be ridiculously low, or merely derisory.

The SNP should be real worried that they lost half their vote with it appears all going over to labour

The SNP should be real worried that they lost half their vote with it appears all going over to labour Even if that were true, they shouldn't worry. It's in the safest Labour Scottish Parliament seat by percentage majority. If they couldn't get within 10% in 2011, they aren't getting close ever.
