a very good result in Ashford, double of the Tory vote no doubt helped by the scandal

Labour has apparently gained Pensby and Thingwall with a 543 majority.

Labour has apparently gained Pensby and Thingwall with a 543 majority. Bit of a contrast to Leasowe/Moreton, that

It certainly helps paint Leasowe and Moreton as more a consequence of the personal popularity of the Conservative candidate there than a reflection of party allegiance.

Berrylands
LD 39.5, Con 31.0, Lab 18.6, UKIP 7.1, G 4.6
I'll take that. Been a pretty good night for Labour, the inevitable shellacking in a couple of hours notwithstanding.

I hope my inability to predict the correct winner in these by-elections is reflected in Eastleigh

no one will care about us tomorrow morning no matter what the result is in Eastleigh

The two by-elections in Kingston last year saw a roughly 8% swing from LD to Conservative, partly but not wholly due to an increase in the Labour vote. This time Labour's vote rose handily enough but the Tories are down more than the LDs

Excellent result for UKIP in Ashford given the dreadful campaign that was run - due in no part to our excellent candidate.

Just internal lack of competence - No electoral roll available to the candidate - which made canvassing tough... not enough money for a seond leaflet even though just a one-sided photocopy effort was wanted ... just general not able to fight a local byelection problems... will be put right for the County election though!

Vote totals from the Wirral, according to a local journo's tweet:
Lab 1411, Con 868, LD 834, UKIP 426, Green 74, EngDem 53
What's really encouraging for Labour is that the majority is larger than the UKIP vote.

Pleased with our vote in the circumstances. Compared to other parts of the Wirral, it keeps us around and about for the future. Excellent result for Labour.

The SNP should be real worried that they lost half their vote with it appears all going over to labour I'm sorry Ian, but the Labour vote was down 700 votes and the SNP down 400, so it's impossible to say whether a lot of people switched or just more Labour voters turned out. I can't imagine that any other party poured too many resources into this one.
