I think (without checking) that you can use old-fashioned descriptions such as "housewife" and "grocer" or "fat old busybody" on parish council ballot papers. ? Yes. The normal restrictions don't apply to parish council elections.

For what it's worth, I won't be at the Fairfield count tonight (due to high demand for places) but I have given strict instructions to my colleagues to tweet the result as soon as it's declared. From past experience, that should be about 11:30pm.

Is JohnLoony able to vote today in this local by-election? No; I live in the part of the old Fairfield ward which is now Park Hill & Whitgift ward.

According to what we have accidentally noticed while the postal votes were being processed, it looks as though the Fairfield by-election will be close. Possibly very close. And there is likely to be a substantial share of votes also for the Lib Dems, although not quite enough to win. I wouldn't be surprised if the winning candidate gets less than a third of the votes. For what it's worth: if Jayde Edwards (Conservative) does win the by-election, it will be the first time since 1992 that a council by-election in Croydon has resulted in a gain by one party from another, and the first time since 1977 that the Conservative Party has gained a seat from Labour.* * in 1976 & 1977 there were 4 by-elections in Croydon in which Conservative gained seats from Labour: q.v. page 7 of this londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1978-5-4.pdfand page 22-23 of this londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1974-5-2.pdf

Only one council result, but if Labour want to cause grief here (not that I think they will here and now, though Manchester Labour did in '17), they'll be parading this all around. If they do that, though, they could trigger more LD activity in Truro.

I make the Labour vote share down by 10.2% in Fairfield and 6.5% in Wadebridge West.
The Independent, intervening in Wadebridge West, has drawn nearly all his votes from the Lib Dem. The Lib Dem vote share is down by 31.6%.

Although pointless to take too much from the Fairfield by-election with regards to the GE, but if those changes happened in Croydon Central from the 2017 result, who would win?
