You’d fancy the Tories to take this in a by-election.
A GE... more difficult clearly.

I think we've already had the last byelection of this Parliament.

Odd move given that he'll be out of a job if Corbyn wins.

Odd move given that he'll be out of a job if Corbyn wins. It's a Govt appointment but he won't be a Minister so can't just be sacked, ie he'd have a contract and notice period like any employee.
Plus it's 12/1 for Labour to get a majority anyway.

Much of the original reporting of this suggested Mann had resigned as an MP with immediate effect, and also from the Labour party.
It now appears that neither are true.
Our fearless truth seeking media, eh?

Our fearless truth seeking media, eh? Recycling of stories by newspapers is presumably based on the idea that most people don't read newspapers.
Metro do this all the time. I'm often reading it and thinking "Didn't that happen about a month ago?"

Our fearless truth seeking media, eh? I wonder how much of it was that, and how much was Mann trying to make it sound more dramatic than "I'm going to step down as an MP at the next election".

I think Labour would be Basset by problems in a by-election here.

Bassetlaw had very good local elections for Labour in May.

I think Labour would be Basset by problems in a by-election here. They certainly would be if they hired this one:

By-election back on, assuming he accepts his seat in the Lords?

And at least he's not going to be a Labour peer which saves us having to remove the whip. He has effectively been a Tory MP for many years I always find it amusing when someone who is at best a caricature is taken seriously.

Has it occurred to anyone else that John Mann looks and sounds a bit like Owen Jones might in a few decades

So the Mann of principle has been bought off with a title. Typical politician. 👎 👽
It really is tiresome when people - because they hate someone's views - impugn their integrity.
People who give up their seats or Parties (such as him or Field) for no financial gain but on principle are the direct opposites of defectors who simply swing whatever way the wind happens to be blowing at the time in order to keep the salary. It's largely Cllrs - who are members of the Cllr for life Party - but there's certainly been MPs over the years who have simply jumped ship due to the polls. Indeed 2 ex-Tory MPs sit as Labour Peers.
There are plenty of examples of expenses troughers on both the Left and Right, but most recent moves aren't amongst them. Although I caveat that with the "doing a Chuka" which appears to be standing in a different seat for 3 simple reasons: in order to save his blushes (of losing his own constituency), it gets him the publicity he craves and he gains the extra severance allowance available to losing MPs. I was amused that ex-Home Sec Rudd & the learned Grieve didn't appear aware of electoral law however: standing as an Ind Cons isn't permitted since Blair changed the law in 2004.

Who are the two Labour peers who used to be Tory MPs?
