A relatively good result for the Liberal Party in Old Swan. Managed to move passed the Greens into second and keep us behind them. I guess they must have put in more than just a token effort.

Not much sign of an SNP surge there.

NORTH LANARKSHIRE Thorniewood First preferences Norah Mooney (Scottish Labour Party) 1,362 Eve Rowan Cunnington (Scottish National Party (SNP)) 1,202 Lorraine Nolan (Scottish Conservative and Unionist) 296 Colin Robb (Scottish Liberal Democrats) 168 Rosemary McGowan (Scottish Green Party) 46 Can someone explain to me how the Labour candidate could be declared elected on the basis of first pref votes only when they have less than 50%%? I of course understand that its unlikely that the transferred votes of the Green, Lib Dem and Tory candidates would go in large numbers to theSNP, but I was still puzzled at such a fast declaration. Do they already have the transfer stages and just haven't bothered to announce them, or has the SNP candidate already conceded. or what?

The subsequent rounds have taken place, but haven't been published yet. Scottish byelections are counted by optical vote reader so they can be declared quickly.

It would've been a fairly quick one because they only had to redistribute 510 votes

Well, presumably it was electronic in which case once you have all the votes recorded it is practically instantaneous. We are not talking about cpu intensive calculations here

I don't remember such a relatively quick count in Scottish by-elections before - maybe because we were waiting for the later stages to be published?

I'm not doing the prediction comp at present but I had my own forecast in raw votes , not just percentages, written down for Chestfield, which indeed has been one of the most solidly posh Tory villages in Kent. I had it down as Con 700, LD 550 -Actual was Con 728, LD 562. On the lesser places Labour did slightly better and the Greens and the Indy slightly worse than I expected, but still a remarkable turn around.
