First Conservative by-election gain in a Met council since Nov 2008. Could be the last for some time to come, as well TBH I was surprised nobody took a punt on a Tory win in the competition, given how staggeringly different the 2012 result - with yesterday's successful candidate - was to both '11 and '10 (there can't be many other places like this in the whole country) Factor in a lower turnout in the middle of winter, together with the obviously polarised nature of the ward, and....... I'm surprised that nobody went for a Tory win either, but then I learnt a long time ago not to do predictions Can I just add my congratulations to Ian on his result.

On another place, they made me noticed this exchange in the Commons
Leader of the House: blah blah....blah blah... My final point is that the shadow Leader of the House might have a small problem with democracy. There was a local government by-election in her constituency in the Wirral. In that by-election, sadly occasioned by the death of the sitting member, in Leasowe and Morton East—a ward Labour won last year by a majority of 318—Ian Lewis, the Conservative candidate won by a majority of 265 votes. On the same day, in the neighbouring constituency of Wirral South, in a by-election in Heswall ward, the Conservative Kathryn Hodson overturned a Labour majority and won the seat, pushing the Labour party, which held the seat last year, into third place.
... uhm, is reading previous election results a too much hard task for him or doesn't he pay enough to hire some decent researchers?

These days there's less of an excuse for that kind of nonsense when there are so many good resources around for previous election results.

FFS, This is the Leader of the House making schoolboy errors. Labour's about as likely to ever win Heswall at council level as they are of winning Esher and Walton at Westminster. Then again, Lansley's never struck me as the sharpest knife in the drawer...

Yes, it is too much to expect Lansley not to be a charmless and clueless arsehole. I'm pretty sure he was born that way.
