LAMBETH Brixton Hill Lab 1593 Green 344 L Dem 274 C 164 TUSC 72 UKIP 63 SPGB 34 Congratulations to the epic Councillor Tiedemann, who is one of Croydon's finest exports to Lambethland. In this case, I think my preference for the candidates in terms of personality outweighs my preference for the parties. (Tim Briggs is a booliak, despite being on EastEnders once).

First Conservative by-election gain in a Met council since Nov 2008. Could be the last for some time to come, as well TBH I was surprised nobody took a punt on a Tory win in the competition, given how staggeringly different the 2012 result - with yesterday's successful candidate - was to both '11 and '10 (there can't be many other places like this in the whole country) Factor in a lower turnout in the middle of winter, together with the obviously polarised nature of the ward, and.......

Tbh the turnout in Leasowe for January was amazing. 30.5%. Comparatively Heswall on the same day was 19.7%!

I expect the turnout was significantly higher in the strong Lewis areas. Still, thank you for letting me know that we will win the seat back in just 16 months

It seems the Conservatives in Leasowe ran a personality campaign, as their candidate was a former councillor for the same ward (2008-2012) who clearly had a personal vote when he stood. I was struck by the slogan at the top of the May 2012 leaflet here which was the same point made by several London Labour MPs when they successfully defend their marginal seats in 2010. We will see in 2014 whether a personal vote for a popular candidate can be converted into shifting the whole ward politically. My impression is that this is easier in authorities which have all out elections than in those which elect by thirds.

As we can see, Wirral elections can be very unpredicatable, and incredible campaigners can get stunning results there. From twitter over the past few days, a few Labour campaigners got very carried away with themselves stating they were going to win, and then didn't.

Not terribly arsed about what people claim on Twitter, tbh (besides, I don't think anything on that score will ever surpass what Yvonne Ridley said just before the Nov 29th byelections last year )

Here is some background to the by-election in the Hill ward of Wisbech Town Council in the District of Fenland, Cambridgeshire. Wisbech Town Council comprises 18 members, elected from seven wards as follows – Clarkson (2), Hill (4), Kirkgate (2), Medworth (2), Peckover (2), Staithe (2) and Waterlees (4). All the Wisbech town wards are coterminous with the Fenland district wards of the same name. The council strengths were as follows: Elections on 3 May 2007: Con 18 12 Conservatives in 5 wards were returned unopposed. Elections on 5 May 2011: Con 13, Lib Dem 2, Independent 2, Lab 1 All wards were contested. On 22 September 2011 Garry Tibbs (Con) held the by-election in Staithe ward, caused by the sad death of Roger Green (Con) in a road traffic accident. On 25 June 2012, the Council co-opted Steve Tierney (Con) in Peckover ward, following the resignation of Nick Meekins (Con). The current town mayor and the deputy mayor (and the council leader) are Con. The result in Hill ward on 3 May 2007 was: Elected – Con 4 unopposed The result in Hill ward on 5 May 2011 was: Con 735/721/715/699, Lab 417 Elected – Con 4 The by-election on 17 January is caused by the death of Bruce Wegg (Con), who was also a district councilor for Hill ward. The candidates are Lab, Con and Independent. The Lab and Independent candidates are the same as for the district council by-election. The result in the Hill ward of Fenland District Council on 3 May 2007 was Elected – Con 2 unopposed The result in the Hill ward of Fenland District Council on 5 May 2011 was Con 797/677, Lab 366, Lib Dem 202 Elected – Con 2 Result very similar to the District Council by-election: Conservative 310 Labour 112 Independent 111
