I really can't see any of these wards changing hands, although am not sure how strong the independent candidate is in fenland.

I really can't see any of these wards changing hands, although am not sure how strong the independent candidate is in fenland. I notice he shares a name with one of the Labour candidates for the town council elections in 2011. John White is hardly an uncommon name, but if they're the same person then that may make an upset even less likely.

Sounds like fairly standard scaremongering to try and persuade their activists to come out and campaign.

East Anglian Lefty is quite right. John White, the Independent candidate for the Hill ward by-elections in Fenland District and Wisbech Town must be the same as the unsuccessful Labour candidate in Kirkgate ward for the Wisbech Town Council elections on 5 May 2011. They both live at 15 Windsor Drive, Wisbech.

I probably need a rest: I was waiting for results of these by-elections and wondering why no-one was mentioning them on twitter right now. Then I realized it's next Thursday!

I sort of know David Nettleton from another place. Do you know anything about the reasons for his resignation?

David Nettleton remains an Independent councillor on St. Edmundsbury Borough Council for the Risbygate ward. The Risbygate by-election back on PCSO polling day was caused by the resignation of the other ward member, a Conservative.
David Nettleton resigned from the Town Council back on 20 July 2012. He told the Bury Free Press: "I was planning to resign from the Town Council next February so that any by-election would coincide with the county council elections. Recent events make it important to me that I go now."
The Bury Free Press reported on 20 July that he was expected to undergo surgery next week, but plans to return to his duties as a councillor on St. Edmundsbury Borough Council early next month.

Am I correct in thinking that Ian Lewis, the Conservative candsidate, was an occasional poster on the old site? I lived in this ward about 40 years ago so keep an eye on its results, and have always been surprised to see how well the Conservatives fare here. When I lived in Leasowe it was the sort of place that you either voted Labour or not at all, and the only Tories lived in the big houses along Leasowe Road. Given how the Wirral is generally trending away from the Conservatives (as has been noted on other threads), it will be interesting to see if they can challenge Labour here again this week. I note that TUSC are also standing in the Heswall by-election. I can't imagine there can be many other wards that can be less promising for them!

Both the Tory and LibDem candidates in Leasowe were known to the old place. Is this a first??

Possibly. I'm not sure if any of our many Swalians may have contested the same election at some point, as most were anonymnous. Also didn't Old War Horse defeat Tricky in Kensington & Fairfield?

She didn't. She won in 2006 and Tricky lost his seat in 2007, so they were ward colleagues for a year but did not contest the same eletcion
