Lol - have your 2.5 points then carlton. Like I said to yellowperil I am just reporting the facts. You can pretend you only got 20 faults if you like. You're still in the bottom quintile you fucking snoflake Hmmm! I had cancelled my post, but now wish I hadn't. By the way, thanks a bundle for standing here and doing nothing at all except help to lose a seat to the Remain forces. That follows upon your spectacular failure at Peterborough when you did the same thing. Your party is now a major part of the problem and no part of any solution. I rate the BP below the LDs and boy is that low! It wasn't exactly my decision, but if you want to have it that way, then it was the Conservative party in Peterborough who split the vote and let in a Remain MP and a Socialist to boot. We saw what happened previously when UKIP vacated the field of battle - the Conservatives cannot be trusted to deliver on the result of the referendum. If they do ever deliver then this problem disappears for them. Until they do then damn right we hold their feet to the fire. Boris needs to, and almost certainly will, call an election and then there can hopefully be arrangements whereby we don't split the Leave vote where it matters but we absolutely do oppose 'Conservative' candidates who can't be trusted on this. That is necessary to win a parliamentary majority to deliver Brexit. I fully expect that to happen and for this constituency to revert to the Conservative column at that election

That follows upon your spectacular failure at Peterborough when you did the same thing. Your party is now a major part of the problem and no part of any solution. I rate the BP below the LDs and boy is that low! ‘When a party stands aside or stands down or enters a pact, it proves two things to itself and to the world. It shows that it is weak and timid and at core not really a serious party. It also proves that its ideals and principles and voter loyalty are not very important to it. A party that is more concerned to ensure another party loses than to attempt to win for itself and to gradually build support and to convert and alter minds has in that act lost any claim to respect and become a mere fellow traveller to a larger party.’ ——- A post you made made a little over a month ago in the Brecon and Radnorshire thread, Carlton. And it was the minor third party Conservatives who led to a Labour hold in Peterborough. I stand by that.........For a political party!!!! The BP is not a political party in any way or shape or form. It is a grandstanding Farage vehicle for his personal spoiling tactics and his ability to strut fret and preen on a bigger stage. This re-branded UKIP is proving once again that it can rapidly marshall forces on the negative and the destructive side of politics, mass out a big vote from the unthinking mass, but never win any fucking seats at all. All it does is bugger up the field for serious parties trying to get things done. It is a party of one bloody man. It has no rules or constitution or structure and not one whit of a policy on any subject. It relies on a certain sort of person to rush after the cavalcade, drink the beer and sing the song and clamour off down the road to nowhere. It is an insurgency without a point or a goal. If we leave in October I hope it will be over at last? In the meantime it is a bloody nuisance to everyone, to Brexit, to proper politics and even to sanity.

Spent five hours up there this afternoon. There’s energy in the LD Campaign but there’s a deffo Boris bounce, and a shed load of Conservative direct mail ‘from Boris’’ specifically regarding Brexit has gone out. That plus general poling day nerves. Interesting. This looks as if we'll finally have an exciting by election. Peterborough wasn't exciting, seriously?

Interesting. This looks as if we'll finally have an exciting by election. Peterborough wasn't exciting, seriously? No. It was obvious that Labour had clung on narrowly. The evening was spent waiting for that to be confirmed, the only saving grace was watching This Week.

Strange how much one can agree with all of that while coming at it from exactly the opposite perspective.

Despite the hype, it was always fairly clear how this one was going to go too. Indeed the LibDem majority was ultimately twice as big!

Then maybe you shouldn’t have encouraged such a party by voting for it. Yes. On one level that is of course obvious and true. I vote for various reasons and to help various causes and events. I vote both for and against people, parties and policies. That has led me to vote Conservative, Indpendent Conservative, Independent, Labour, SNP, UKIP and BP. Some with reluctance and some look less good in retrospect. The dreadful Heath decisions to embrace the EEC/EU over the will of a significant section of his party has been the cause of much of my subsequent action. UKIP was blunt force trauma to frighten the party and Cameron into a Referendum. The BP was blunt force tauma to rid us of May and make real leaving at least a possibility. They both worked up to a point. I do not resile from either. But as parties they were never the answer to anything and they still aren't.

Maybe I should re-enter the weekly prediction competition. Incidentally the by-election result is nice for my dad because it's his birthday today and he's a LD supporter.

FWIW, I think had the election day been a week earlier the majority would have been twice the size it was.

I think he means that the Lib Dem majority in Brecon and Radnor was twice as big as the Labour majority in Peterborough, although I am at a loss to know why such a comparison might be made.

True, but you have to factor in the nerves in LD circles in a contest where we are expected to win, as opposed to a Witney or even Richmond Park* where a win would be a triumph but defeat can be passed off as a decent performance. Getting the ball over the line when clear through without dropping it will settle nerves bit, I hope. *Dec 2016 vintage. I think we'd be fairly strong favourites if there was a BE there now.

Because I was responding to somebody who thought Peterborough hadn't been an "exciting" byelection but B&R was?

Obviously Brecon and Radnor was more exciting than Peterborough, because Peterborough did not have a by-election in 1985 to compare it with.
