It’s closed now but it was always dreadful. As was the Cricketers across the road (even during the brief period I was its relief manager). And as was the other pub on the corner, the White Hart. All closed now, and not missed. Amazing place for terrible pubs, Mitcham. The only place where I went into a Wetherspoons (before the smoking ban) and could barely breathe in the no-smoking area. Normally you can spot a terrible pub from the outside, flat roofs always being a clue, but the White Hart and Burn Bullock looked lovely from the outside and the Cricketers quite decent; yet all of them ghastly. Terrible beer and a clientele who'd knife you as soon as look as you, if not sooner. Not so far away from that place on the way to Phipps Bridge which got closed after someone got killed, I forget the name - that was more obviously one to avoid. The Queen’s Head and Windmill were fine, and that’s as good as Mitcham got for drinking. It probably helped that both those were away from the main drag. The Queen’s is also closed now, though the Windmill is somehow still open.

It is very difficult for the country to go to the dogs anymore. When John referred to a stadium near the "United ground" I immediately thought of the original United rather than the newcomers from Newton Heath. But the dog track (still going) in Sheffield is near the Wednesday ground I know Owlerton stadium well. I have been there several times to watch Sheffield Tigers v Edinburgh Monarchs speedway.

Well, it appears that Hazel Grove is currently underwater, so turnout might not be great tomorrow.

A fixture I have also seen. One of only a handful of pre-war greyhound stadiums still staging speedway (I think Newcastle, Wolverhampton and Birmingham are the only others)

I confess i have never been to Owlerton. Speedway or dog racing never appealed. I have been to Hillsborough (aka the Rustbucket where Wadsley Bridge Athletic pretend to play football) a few times, and Bramall Lane many times, including to watch cricket..

It’s a pity the whole thing wasn’t flooded out when I stood in a local by-election in Hazel Grove (Norbury/Torkington) Ward for Stockport Metropolitan District Council, back in 1976.

Any news from our Stockport correspondents on the water levels? Still very high but subsiding. Large parts of the area still closed off, although this affects Bramhall and Poynton more than Hazel Grove. Although if rain appears this afternoon, there might be trouble.

I was so astonished when I read this bit, that my head literally fell off and my elbow is literally exploded: The truth, of course, is that absolutely everybody in the entire universe, except for an extremely tiny minority of deranged and insane people, fully recognise, and know how to pronounce, the town of Ystradgynlais, specifically because they clearly remember the media and the news reports referring to it constantly, regularly, and frequently during the coverage of the by-election in 1985.
