Can I stick my neck out and venture that in the present climate that might present the chance of two more Lib Dem wins?
Of course we are hoping for 3 Lib Dem by-election wins on that day!

Mainly LD stakeboards up in Bullock Smithy, a few Tory ones. Nothing else. Mike Padfield is a perennial Green candidate by the way.

I imagine old-fashioned village cricket demon bowler. Sadly the locals didn't see it that way. It had been named after a pub (still standing) called the Bullock Smithy Inn, and was effectively renamed after the Hazel Grove Inn, which was knocked down a few years ago.

I'm reminded of the Burn Bullock pub in Mitcham, named after a former landlord and Surrey cricketer. You don't get surnames like Bullock anymore, nor forenames like Burn, let alone the combination. It stands next to the Mitcham cricket club pavilion, on the opposite side of the road to the cricket ground. If there's a clatter of wickets batsmen have to dodge the traffic to get from the pavilion to the crease. I'm afraid it was a pretty terrible pub in my day.

It’s closed now but it was always dreadful. As was the Cricketers across the road (even during the brief period I was its relief manager). And as was the other pub on the corner, the White Hart. All closed now, and not missed.

Normally you can spot a terrible pub from the outside, flat roofs always being a clue, but the White Hart and Burn Bullock looked lovely from the outside and the Cricketers quite decent; yet all of them ghastly. Terrible beer and a clientele who'd knife you as soon as look as you, if not sooner. Not so far away from that place on the way to Phipps Bridge which got closed after someone got killed, I forget the name - that was more obviously one to avoid.

Actors Sandra Bullock and Burn Gorman en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burn_Gorman may beg to differ!

Maybe john07 remembers this, but I found yesterday that Hazel Grove once had a greyhound stadium. It appears to have been sold for development in 1960. I did live in Hazel Grove as a child before the family moved to Cheadle Hulme but had no recollection of the dog track. There was another at White City near to United's stadium that survived until 1981 and the Albion Stadium in Salford that closed in 1976. Belle Vue is the only remaining dog track in the Manchester area and even that is under threat. I have been to that for both dogs and speedway although the latter have moved to a new purpose built stadium.

My mum's first job was collecting the tax from the turf accountants at White City. Must have been not long before it closed. It looks like Hazel Grove was hemmed in down the side of the road to Poynton and the railway line.

Hall Green stadium in Birmingham closed a couple of years ago, leaving only Perry Barr for fans of the sport (it is not dual-purpose with speedway). And I learned comparatively recently that there had been a dog track in my own neighbourhood of Kings Heath, which closed in the early seventies and has been redeveloped for housing.

When John referred to a stadium near the "United ground" I immediately thought of the original United rather than the newcomers from Newton Heath. But the dog track (still going) in Sheffield is near the Wednesday ground
