But equally, the success over vaccines (even a very big one) shouldn't be allowed to airbrush all the previous maladroit episodes out of history. Providing the right perspective on what has happened is one major reason why a proper inquiry would be desirable. They don't deserve it but politically speaking they have got away with it. Perhaps they needed some 'meddling kids' to stop them getting away with it

I expect that in due course the government may well have to accede to a full scale independent inquiry into how the pandemic was handled, and the findings of that could very conceivably provide some openings to the opposition. But even on the most optimistic timetable, that is still some way down the tracks. There seems to have been a rather childish delusion in the press that the failures of a government (and in particular this government) should be subject to heavy criticism, but that any successes should be written off as chance. There's a pretty clear causal link though between heavy ministerial involvement and screw-ups during the pandemic. For those of us on the inside, it's been very clear that the efficacy of Local Resilience Forums has completely bailed out the government on an ongoing basis, largely where there's ministerial missives which flatly contradict either their own previous statements or those of colleagues.

The 'spin' of 'just' makes one wonder.

For a man who dominated this country's politics just a few years ago, that's piss poor.

For a man who dominated this country's politics just a few years ago, that's piss poor. And that's after a week of publicity following the launch and defections. It's going to be hard to keep that level of attention, so they could actually go backwards from there.

Survation uses UK data so the GB equivalent would be Con 44 Lab 36.

Another poll claiming to show the Tories ahead in London. No it doesn't. How can some of this forum's most longstanding members continue to make such absurd claims even after being corrected time and time again.

Of course you are correct in the sense that sub-samples should not be taken too seriously, but this is the third poll in a week to show this "finding".

It isn't that sub-samples "should not be taken too seriously" it is that they are not a "claim" or a "finding" and should never be presented as such. Since they are not weighted they are simply a straw poll and absolutely meaningless when it comes to measuring opinion.

You are better off addressing that to the majority of social media (including several supposed "journalists") than me tbf (there was even a time when pollsters themselves publicising them was not unknown, but that at least seems to have thankfully died now)

I would hope that on one of the nation's leading psephology forums one of our most prominent members would understand basic principles opinion polling. Clearly I was expecting far too much.
