This has been an incredibly low profile election and the main event has probably been the independent candidate thinking a TV set was a real police station. I don’t know a single other person who has voted and there’s been basically no mention of the election outside political circles and that 1 independent story. None of the candidates seem qualified for the role but McGuinness (Labour) at least seems to want the role to be a glorified advocacy post for greater spending on police. Good enough for me. Quite annoyed at my self for not waiting until that gaffe had occurred before giving her my 2nd pref.

Just voted Labour 1st and Lib Dem 2nd. Nobody else voted while I during the entire time I was there. Quite a few people looked to have already voted though so turnout might not be that abysmal. can I ask what made you decide to use your 2nd preference? Can I ask what made you ask that question? We here on this forum, of all people, should know and understand how the SV system works, and understand that there is no disadvantage to using one's second preference.

15% turnout. It cost me £4 to vote as I had my postal vote in my pocket before catching a plane to Italy and was dragging a case and forgot to post it. It's a useless role but I've voted in every election for 29 years bar one where I couldn't get a postal vote.

Overall turnout figures - highest in Newcastle; nowhere else over 15%.

I think most people assume that Labour will come 1st or 2nd in the first round, so jamie 's second preference is unlikely to be counted.

Wonder why turnout is so much higher in Newcastle than elsewhere

I remember at the inaugural PCC elections in 2012 (held in the middle of November!) there were widespread reports of polling stations where nobody had voted in person.

Wonder why turnout is so much higher in Newcastle than elsewhere The Labour candidate is a Newcastle councillor and cabinet member, so maybe Labour put more effort into turning out the vote there than elsewhere.

I remember at the inaugural PCC elections in 2012 (held in the middle of November!) there were widespread reports of polling stations where nobody had voted in person. There was a ballot box in Newport (Gwent) that had 0 turnout on the day. There was one in either Rummney or Llanrummney in Cardiff South & Penarth that had two votes (and that was combined with a Paliamentry by-election)

It's almost certainly easier to campaign in Newcastle than it is in Northumberland, whichever party you're supporting. It's consistent with previous elections - 2016 the turnouts were: Gateshead 34.7% Newcastle upon Tyne 38.9% North Tyneside 36.5% Northumberland 21.6% South Tyneside 33.3% Sunderland 32.2% Note Northumberland was the only area not to have any simultaneous council election so was just voting for PCC.

Wonder why turnout is so much higher in Newcastle than elsewhere If memory serves, wasn't there an all postal voting trial by Newcastle many years ago, which has meant for many cycles Newcastle has had a structurally higher number of postal voters.

Newcastle upon Tyne was an all-postal pilot in 2003. And in the 2004 EP elections the whole of the North East was an all-postal pilot (which meant the simultaneous local elections were all-postal too).

First stage:
Kim McGuinness (Lab) - 58355 Georgina Hill (Ind) 33,704 Robbie Moore (Con) 33,267 Jonathan Wallace (LD) 28,623
So McGuinness and Hill go through to the second stage.
