Obviously that's true: fewer elections, more LD defences.
If we wanted to make a comparison to see if the LD surge was continuing, it might be more useful to take the last 3 weeks with its 12 elections (3 LD holds, 3 gains) and set that against the next 5 high summer weeks - I think that's 11 elections of which 4 are LD defences. If the LDs can hold those 4 and gain 2 or 3 more I think we could say they are still on course?

Pete Whitehead's obviously correct, but to some extent it's timely to look at whether our ability to retain wards is improving - I think I'm right in saying that middleenglander's summaries over the last year or so show us well above average at gaining in by elections but below average in retaining seats. Starting where we are, we need to make a lot of gains, but long-term being able to keep them is more important than taking advantage of circumstances that have gifted us a by-election, especially if the incumbent has been forced to resign for non-attendance or similar.

Regret to report the death of Jerry Wickham, until recently Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Public Protection on Wiltshire council where he was Conservative councillor for Ethandune division. I wondered where Ethandune was- not too many clues in the name, but I see its a very strange shaped division taking in much of the rural bits lying between Westbury and Trowbridge. We have already had some excitement from both those towns but I guess Ethandune will be that bit more difficult.

I'm looking forward to Andrew's Previews already because it seems to have quite an interesting history. There was a Battle of Ethandune in 879 when Alfred the Great defeated a Danish army. It seems that 'Ethandune' later changed into Edington, which is one of the villages in the division. Ethandune only got revived as a ward name in 1983.

"Ethandune" is the name given in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and other primary sources to the site of Alfred the Great's decisive victory over the Vikings under Guthrum when, after Alfred had been driven from the throne and had hidden over winter in Athelney, he emerged from hiding, gathered the men of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire, and the house of Wessex went on to create England. It is generally assumed that the modern form is Edington, which is just outside Westbury, so as and when a by-election arises the recent Westbury by-electionshould indeed be relevant to current form. I suspect the strange shape of the division may be influenced by Salisbury Plain and the uninhabited army training area.

There was an Ethandune by-election earlier in this decade. I think what I wrote for that covered most of those points.

Did the Danes argue that the defeat was actually a swing away from Alfred based on previous skirmishes?
