Although the list identifies 20 by-elections not yet called, 3 of these are inmpending resignations where the sitting Councillor had announced that they intend to resign in the coming weeks
Aberdeen UA, Kincorth / Nigg /Cove - SNP impending resignation Bexley LB, Longlands - Conservative impending resignation Rhonnda Cynon Taf UA, Hawthorn - Labour impending resignation
Also 6 of these vacancies will see ward elections in May and unless by-elections are soon called it is likely there will be "double" elections then.
Amber Valley BC, Somercotes - Labour died 25 November Chorley BC, Chorley North West - Independent died 15 December Coventry MB, Upper Stoke - Labour died 25 November Crawley BC, Ifield - Labour died 27 November Gateshead MB, Birtley - Labour died 12 December Knowsley MB, Halewood South - Independent died over Christmas period
This leaves 11 vacancies although even here most will see elections for Police & Crime Commissioners in early May and so some of these council vacancies may be filled at the same time.
Barrow BC, Roosecote - Conservative died 1 January. Clackmannanshire UA, Clackmannan East - Conservative resigned 31 December Gloucestershire CC, Winchcombe and Woodmancote - Conservative died 8 December North Lincolnshire UA, Ashby - Labour died 29 October North West Leicestershire DC, Worthington & Bredon - Conservative died 8 November Stratford on Avon DC, Welford on Avon - Independent died 3 January Surrey Heath BC, Bagshot - Lib Dem died 4 January. Swansea UA, Castle - Labour died 5 January Telford & Wrekin UA, Donington - Labour died 4 January Test Valley BC, Chilworth, Nursling & Rownhams - Conservative died 16 January. Wiltshire UA, Till and Wylye Valley - Conservative resigned 19 January.
I think there is a further vacancy under the 6 month rule:
Salford MB, Kersal - Labour died 14 December

Aah, Stapeley! That takes me back! Many happy days as a kid at the old Water Gardens.

I'm not absolutely certain there is a rule to prevent Tom Copley continuing to serve as a Lewisham councillor while also being Deputy Mayor for London. It depends. The disqualification provisions are in s. 69 of the GLA Act and only includes those appointed under a committee. Mayoral appointments are under s. 67 but are in two different categories: two political advisers, and 11 other members of staff. In a little-noticed move, James Murray was moved from being a s. 67(1)(b) appointment to s. 67(1)(a) at the beginning of November; that allowed him to be a Parliamentary candidate while still being a GLA officer. As Tom Copley is standing for re-election to the Assembly, he's presumably a s. 67(1)(a) appointment.

This is in the 'Notes to editors' at foot of the release: "Tom’s start date will be announced shortly, this will follow him stepping down as a Lewisham Borough councillor and London Assembly Member."

Tom Copley AM (Lab, London) is appointed as Deputy Mayor, therefore stands down as councillor from Lewisham (causing a by-election in Sydenham) and at the same time stands down from the Assembly. As he is a regional list AM, that means the next person on the list is invited to become the Assembly Member from the Labour list. That person is Alison Moore, herself a councillor representing East Finchley on Barnet!

Lab died. I’ve a friend in Yoxall; for years she and two Labour colleagues tried to get on to the Parish Council under the Labour banner, and each time they got fewer than 25 votes, then one year one of their number forgot to enter “Labour Party candidate” on the nomination forms, leaving them as No Description. The three of them were elected with over 150 votes each.

Re Crewe South on 27 February, I notice from the SOPN that Brian Silvester is standing as in Independent; is this notice of the demise of For Britain, of which he was Membership Secretary?
