Given the success of independent candidates in this year’s cycle of local elections I wonder how many more resignations we can expect. There must be many who did not expect to win. Many of Herefordshire’s wards, but not this one, only had two choices on the ballot Conservative or some sort of independent. Was this organised or are the bigger parties just very weak outside the towns?

are the bigger parties just very weak outside the towns? The Liberals and then LibDems used to be very well organised throughout the county, but the Coalition shattered things for them like nowhere else; probably didn't help that they were already at a bit of a low ebb when all that hit home. Labour used to have a surprisingly effective local government organisation in Hereford city, but of the sort based around a handful of people: I don't know all the details, but essentially some less than pleasant people moved to the city a few years ago, took over the local party and turned it into a toxic hellscape before moving elsewhere themselves.

This does seem unfair, that she had to resign. Jobsworths rules is rules, rather than common sense.

You would have thought somebody could have found a way to "fire" her with immediate notice rather than force a notice period on her. Quite. Although this is a pretty basic rule for any established political group to know. I'd get it if they were new to it.

Sad news about Richard Harrap. He used to be my one of my local councillors. My father was a friend of his and they knew each other through their memberships of the Rotary Club.

Chittlehampton nominations: Neil Cunningham Basil (Green) Cecily Jane Blyther (Labour) Ray Jenkins (Conservative) Victoria Clare Nel (Lib Dem)
So the ward will have its first ever party councillor. Lib Dems and Greens have nominated on the ‘second chance’, meaning the Lib Dems still have the chance to take control of the council.

Another Welsh one. Penddu will be overjoyed. Another opportunity for gwlad gwlad gwlad to ... Not put up a candidate. We are holding off till 2021 Assembly elections. But Cyncoed would not be a target area for us in any case....
