Polls closing has come around, I know that Southampton will be counting tonight. I can confirm that the Lib Dems ran more than a paper campaign, although personally I wasn't involved and I don't know quite how extensive it was or whether it will work out. The socialists have been working quite hard as well and seem to have latched on to the image of the outgoing councillor, but many voters will be put off with the socialist label. Certainly an election which had to keep Labour on their toes, although they're certainly in a reasonable position to win. I know that UKIP and Integrity have put some effort in, and the Conservatives seem to have been quite quiet, although of course national politics mean they won't be completely irrelevant. Should be an interesting result although at the same time I wouldn't be overly surprised by a firm Labour win. are you using socialist as a noun in the way commentators did in the 50s? I'm using it to refer to the Socialist Alternative candidate and her supporters. Partly due to the independent group in Coxford having formerly been part of TUSC, TUSC and related entities still contest a lot of elections in Southampton, and hence 'socialists' referring explicitly to them is pretty common to those politically involved in the area (in my experience anyway). I should have made that clearer, and I wasn't referring to Labour with it if that's what you meant!

Durham has announced the Wingate turnout (24.2%) at only 10:17 PM so looks like an early result.

Durham has announced the Wingate turnout (24.2%) at only 10:17 PM so looks like an early result. Only 2 polling stations. Electorate is 2966, so that’s about 718 votes. Not sure how you have a turnout by 10.17!

Turnout in Norbury and Pollards Hill was 25.3%.
Slightly concerned (in the sense of 'are they counting tonight?') about hearing nothing from Southampton, despite it being an urban ward and there being lots of tweets during the day about an extensive Labour GOTV operation.

The official notice on the council website says they’re counting tonight at the Civic Centre: www.southampton.gov.uk/images/lge_notice%20of%20time%20and%20place-r_tcm63-406060.pdf

CROYDON Norbury and Pollards Hill BEN-HASSEL, Leila (Labour) 1,379 GUNTER, Tirena Hilary (Conservative) 324 O’GRADY, Mark James Gerard (Independent) 162 CHANCE, Rachel Mary (Green) 91 ROZNERSKA, Margaret (Independent) 72 BURCHETT, Guy Michael Clinton (Liberal Democrat) 70 GARNER, Kathleen (UKIP) 40 For those who thrive on statistics: The turnouts were: NPH1: 248 NPH2: 145 NPH3: 327 NPH4: 378 NPH5: 369 polling stations: 1467 out of 7231 (20.3%) postal: 678 out of 1262 (53.7%) total: 2145 out of 8493 (25.3%) The result was declared at 11:21pm It took me 1 hour 15 minutes to walk from Park Hill to Norbury It took me 1 hour 13 minutes to walk back The count was in the same school as one of the polling stations (albeit with different entrances) so the first ballot box arrived at 10:03 The Labour Party has been tweeting several canvassing sessions with large groups of people, but we only had two main sessions (one with 7 people and one with 30 people including Shaun Bailey), which might explain the high Lab:Con ratio. I was only in Norbury for one session during the campaign, and I don't actually know anything about Mark O'Grady, or who/what he is, or what campaigning he did, so I can't explain how he got so many votes. Malgorzata Roznerska was talking to someone in Polish on the phone for a lot of the time during the count, but during a suitable interval I managed to sang the Polish national anthem. The sample of postal votes which I saw a week ago had a Lab:Con ratio of about 2.5

The 162 votes and 7.6% of the vote for Mark O'Grady is the biggest number of votes for an Independent candidate in a council by-election in Croydon since: Waddon, 12th August 1993 Peter Collier (Independent Resident) 213 (6.7%)
...and the biggest percentage of the vote for an Independent candidate in a council by-election in Croydon since: Woodcote & Coulsdon West, 11th June 1981 Maurice Dunbar (Local Affairs) 256 (10.1%)
if you want to be precisely pedantic in allowing only the description "Independent" then it's the biggest number *and* percentage since: East Ward [approximately what is now Shirley North], 6th July 1972 J.R. Simmonds (Independent) 1,221 (27.1%)
